Great Games You May Not Have Heard About

Wed, 12/12/2012 - 9:25pm

Here at Top Toys Blog, we are always looking for unique toys and games for children. After looking at so many toys that are “different” in one way or another, we wanted to share some that we think you should definitely check out. From classic board games to other types of games you might never have heard or thought about before, these are sure to give you a little something to think about.

Scribblish

For those who like board games and something a little different, there is Scribblish, which can provide hours and hours of fun. Made by Hasbro, this may be a game you have not heard about before, but it’s one you and your family should definitely check out.

This game is best for children age eight years old and up, but it is suited well to adults too. Even those who do not have a lot of great artistic skills, it can be fun. In fact, it’s almost more fun the less artistic people are during the game. This is the fun behind Scribblish and the fun of scribbling.

Ideal Doggie Doo Game

Another game you’ve never played is the Doggie Doo game! Granted, this is not for everyone, but those families who are into poop, farts and similar types of humor, this can be a great way to have a little fun without a huge mess.

Basically, you feed the dog a treat then squeeze his head. If he poops, the person needs to “scoop the poop” to be able to stay in the game. Not every person is going to enjoy the humor in this game, but for those who “get it” the game can be a lot of fun.

It is recommended for children age four years old and older. You do need a slightly twisted sense of humor to enjoy the game, but for the price, it’s a fun and different way to pass the time (while the dog passes gas!)

Cranium Cadoo

This fun game from Cranium (they do the Apples to Apples comparison game) is fun but not a lot of people know about it. There are actually several different versions of the game out there, including one for younger children as well as various booster packs that can bring more life to the game.

Created for ages 7 to 77 years old, it was named the 2002 Game of the Year by the Toy Industry Association, which is quite an honor. The game is a lot of fun for the whole family with eight different activity types as well as 300 questions that will get kids thinking … and giggling.

Other Unique Games out There?

These are just two of the many different games that are out there that people don’t know about. If you know of a great game that isn’t well known that you think families would enjoy, we would love to hear from you. Leave a comment below or contact us to give us your recommendation.

Sometimes the games that are not as popular can be just as much fun. In fact, we think some of them can be more fun than the games that everyone else already knows about. Having a fun game that is the family favorite can make Game Night go a lot smoother. The good news is that you don’t have to spend a ton of money to get some of these lesser known games.

No matter what types of games you and your family are into, it’s good to take some time once a week and rather than have another “movie night” get together and have some fun with a great game that not many other people know about. It really is a good way to bring your family together and keep them together for the whole evening, laughing, smiling and having a great time.

Walmart Unveils Top Toy List for Christmas 2012

Sat, 11/03/2012 - 11:23pm

Walmart unveiled their Top Toy List for Christmas 2012 a while ago, but we are going to share their picks with you below. We have also looked at the Fab 15 List of Toys from Kmart as well as other top toys lists for 2012.

Rest assured we are working on finishing up our big, massive, complete and very useful list of the absolute Best Toys of 2012 List – so stay tuned for that.

As the largest seller of toys in the U.S., we know what parents are looking for. Whether bikes, dolls or action figures, we’re committed to having the toys kids want on our shelves at prices their parents can afford all season long,” said Anne Marie Kehoe, vice president of toys, Walmart U.S.

“We carefully crafted our Top 20 Toys List to provide the right assortment for all kids. Making the list available now gives parents the chance to get toys early and take advantage of layaway with no gimmicks.”

For now, these are some of the top toy picks from Walmart. Every year they come out with a list that is a little different, but you can see that a lot of the toys come back year after year.

The thing to remember about top toy lists from retailers is that they may try to push some of the toys – like the ones exclusive to their stores – in order to get a bigger piece of the holiday shopping pie.

However, you do not need to play their game. Here at Top Toys Blog, we give you a good round-up of all the top toys lists out there so that you can get what you need to know to get the perfect gift this year.

Building Toys and Construction Sets for Christmas 2012

Sat, 10/27/2012 - 6:36pm

Top Toys 2012

We are going to take a look at the best building toys for Christmas 2012. There are tons of different building sets out there these days, including some high-tech ones. No matter the age of your little architect, these toys are sure to put a smile on their face for hours and hours. Some of them are even good teaching toys for the basics of engineering and construction.

You may have heard of some of these before – especially LEGO – but some of the newer building sets – like BionicBlox for example – are really cool in a lot of different ways. If you’re wanting to get the perfect gift for a child who loves to build, these ideas should help give you a better idea of what’s available out there for you to get.

One thing that you should keep in mind when choosing something is that you want to get something that is age appropriate and safe. This is especially true for smaller children who like to put small parts in their mouth! As long as you read recommendations, however, and use your common sense, you should be fine.

LEGO Bricks & More Deluxe Brick Box #5508

[buildingtoys1]

Ages: 4 to 18 Years Old

This is a timeless classic. There are many, many different LEGO sets out there for children of all ages, but this is a good way to get them everything they will need to build whatever their imagination can come up with. When compared to some of the themed building sets that are available, this is truly a bargain in a lot of ways.

For those who are into mini-figures, this only comes with two. However, it is easy to buy a pack of extra LEGO minifigures for a reasonable price if you shop around. The set includes over 700 pieces, with a lot of “special pieces” that make LEGOs even more fun in a lot of ways. (Click Here to See Price)

BionicBlox Foundations Kit

[buildingtoys2]

Ages: 3 to 18 Years Old

This is a relatively new building toy for children, but it is special in many ways. We have done a full review of BionicBlox here, but we wanted to add it to this list of the best construction toys for 2012 as well. Their foundation kit comes with 100 interlocking pieces for under $50.

They are not only fun to play with, they can help children learn proportions, math, angles, geometry, and measurement. On top of that, they work with other building sets and are Made in the USA. (Click Here to Buy)

Erector Motorized Racing Car & More

[buildingtoys3]

Ages: 10 to 18 Years Old

You may remember Erector Set if you’re of a certain age. They have been around forever, it seems, but they’re still selling. The Erector Motorized Racing Car & More set from them is designed for boys age 10 to 16 years old – although slightly younger boys who are smarter may dig the set with parental guidance. In any case, for around $50 (lists at $80, but you should be able to find it cheaper) you get 648 pieces – enough to come up with 25 different motorized vehicles, including a race car.

There’s still the replay factor to consider as well. After children get through all 25 of the constructions that come with the set, they are open to come up with their own motorized designs. While not as complex as the LEGO Mindstorm NEXT robot kit, this is a good introduction to electric motors and other principles of engineering. (Click to buy)

Teifoc Castle Variation Brick Construction Set

[buildingtoys10]

Ages: 6 to 10 Years Old

These relatively unknown building sets incorporate real, reusable miniature bricks, Teifoc sets are 100% environmentally friendly, which is important to many people these days. Each Teifoc set comes with a trowel to help lay the sand – which is an entirely safe sand and corn-extract based system of mortar.

Teifoc makes laying bricks and building realistic as well as fun. Many children are able to build an average-size house in just a few short hours.  Once complete, construction projects should be allowed to dry completely overnight. (Buy Here)

Other Building Toys and Construction Sets

Here is a quick rundown of some of the other building sets and construction toys out there.

K’NEX Construction Toys

[buildingtoys4]

These are another popular building set with young boys and girls. They do have Kids K’nex which are suitable for children ages 3 years old and up.

Playmobil Building Sets

This German company is known to make quality toys, and their  building sets are no different.

[buildingtoys5]

Clics Construction Toys

This is not as well known as other building toy brands, but they’re worth a look. We’d like to hear your opinions about them too.

[buildingtoys6]

Lincoln Logs Building Sets

These are classics from yester-year, but they’re not as popular as they were at one time. Still, for a toddler or preschool age boy or girl, they may be great.

[buildingtoys7]

Superstructs Construction Toys

[buildingtoys8]

This is another building set you may not have heard about before, but it’s one you might consider checking out.

 Megabloks Construction Toys

[buildingtoys9]

You may not have heard of these, but they are worth a look if you can find them. They are not as popular as LEGO building sets, but they may be a nice alternative.

No Batteries: Top Toys for Christmas 2012

Sat, 10/27/2012 - 12:52pm

Top Toys 2012

We are going to look at the top toys for christmas 2012 that do NOT require batteries! While this may seem like mission impossible in today’s world, there are still some great toys out there that will work without power.

While there are many good reasons you want to introduce your child to electronics, you may want to get them something that doesn’t make a lot of noise or require you to keep putting out money to keep the toy going.

Best Baby and Toddler Toys with No Batteries

We are going to start with babies and toddlers. You may be surprised at how many great toys are out there that do not need batteries.

  • Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden Railway Set – This is available for around $100 and is good for 2 and 3 year old boys (and girls) who are into trains in a big way. There are a lot of other less expensive sets out there, but this one has everything your child could want … and a little more. When it comes to wooden trains, this one is on the top of a lot of lists for good reason. There are over 100 sections of track and at least 30 different accessories for them to play with. You do want to make sure that they have some room to play, however.  Overall, this is a very good choice if you can spare the money.
  • BionicBlox Foundations Kit – For children age 3 and older, this is one of the best building toys out there. A lot of work and effort has gone into making these fun as well as educational. And they do not require batteries, which is a good thing.  The toys are made in the USA and you can read more about BionicBlox here where we did a full review. From buildings to bridges to wooden robots, the only limit is your child’s imagination. Another cool thing about these is that they are compatible with other building sets for kids. So, your existing toys will work with them, which is nice.
  • Playskool Mr. Potato Head – For children age 2 to 4 years old, Mr. Potato Head is a classic. You may note that he used to have a pipe that came with him, but the new Mr. Potato Head is a bit more conservative and doesn’t have that “accessory” anymore. Still, this is a classic toy that will help children learn about their eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. The toy has great “a-peel” for kids. And when you consider the price – under $20 – you really can’t go wrong if you’re looking for a small gift for a small child.

Top Toys With No Batteries for Elementary Children

For preschool and kindergarten age children, we have some toys that they will love that do not require batteries.

  • Play Doh Big Barrel – This is an oldschool toy, for sure, but there are still many children who love playing with Play Doh. Recommended for children age 3 and up, you do want to make sure they know not to eat it, but even if they do it’s non-toxic. One of the best things about this gift is the price. You can get a large “barrel” of Play Doh for around $20, making it one of the more economically enticing presents with no batteries required. This kit has Play Doh, of course, but it also comes with some accessories that make playing with it more fun.

Popular Toys for Young Children w/Out Batteries

You would think that as children get older they are going to want more and more electronic toys that require batteries, but this is not always the case. Here are some gifts they will love even without any need for power.

  • Art 101 142-Piece Wood Art Set – For budding artists or children who have shown an interest in art, this is a great relatively inexpensive way to get them the tools they need to create awesome works of art. Available for around $30, this is recommended for children age 6 to 15 or so. The set includes pencils, crayon pastels and supplies for watercolor painting. For the price, it’s hard to beat this one. It should give any child hours and hours of enjoyment. It should also be noted that because of the low price, the box is not the best quality and may not hold up over time. Still, it’s a great no-batteries bet in our book.

Other Ideas for No-Battery Toys

If you have other ideas for toys and gifts that do NOT require batteries, we would love to hear from you. Leave a comment below and let us know your ideas. Thanks!

Best Toys for 9 Year Old Girls for Xmas 2012

Sat, 10/27/2012 - 2:10am

Top Toys 2012

We are going to take a look at some of the Best Toys for 9 Year Old Girls for Xmas 2012. Remember that you can check out our top toys for girls age nine years old from all different years on this page. We wanted to take some time to go over some of what is new this year, however, because there’s a good chance these items are going to be on a lot of wishlists this year.

Nine year old girls are becoming more independent, but they may still like some toys that remind them of simpler times when they were younger. They may not do this consciously, but when you look at the wishlists of girls this age, you’re going to see a lot of similarities and patterns.

With all of that in mind, we present our list of some of the NEW toys for 9 year old girls in 2012. Remember you can also check out the toy and gift ideas for girls age nine years old from all different years on this page.

Barbie Collector 2012 Holiday Doll

[girls9toys1]

This Barbie is not really meant to be played with. It is more of a collectible, which might make it a good gift idea for a nine year old girl. The new 2012 Holiday edition Barbie is wearing a red gown with just the right amount of jewelry. While some parents may not like Barbie because of the body-image issue, there’s another way to look at getting this – a financial investment.

Granted, it may take 100 years or more, but someday someone may want to pay more for it than the $40 it is currently priced. This is not for everyone, but it’s new every year and may introduce an enterprising young girl into the world of collecting. However, getting a season of American Pickers (or even Hoarders!) might do better to help this? Okay, moving on… (… or Click Here to Buy)

Monster High Ghouls Rule Line 2012

[girls9toys2]

On the opposite end of the doll spectrum, we have the increasingly popular Monster High collection, which expands in 2012 with new dolls and accessories. Finding the top Monster High Dolls for 2012 is not too hard if you know the 9 year old girl who is getting the gift. (Click here for an in depth look at what’s new for 2012 when it comes to Monster High Dolls.)

Frankie Stein, Clawdeen Wolf, and all the others all have new dolls for 2012 – the Ghouls Rule collection. As we said, these are almost the anti-Barbie in some ways, but there are a lot of nine year old girls who go gaga over them. They are safe for girls age 6 to 12 years old.  Older tween and teen girls may just like the collectible factor, however. (Find at Amazon)

Barbie Photo Fashion Doll

[girls9toys3]

Yes, you can apparently take pictures with Barbie and have them show up as designs for her t-shirt on a small LCD screen. We have a full review of the Barbie Photo Fashion Doll, but we wanted to highlight it for a moment on this page as well because it’s made for girls age 6 to 12 years old.

Available for around $50 (cheaper if you look around – probably a lot cheaper next year!), this is one of those things that tries too hard to do too many things. It’s kind of a creepy toy and kind of a crappy camera. Still, some girls may be introduced to photography thanks to the doll, so there’s that… Overall, we would say pass on this, but we wanted to include it in the list of new toys for 9 year old girls in 2012. (Click Here to Buy)

Crayola Digital Light Designer

[girls9toys4]

The Crayola Digital Light Designer is currently available for around $50 and is intended for girls (and boys) ages 6 to 15 years old. We do a full review of the Crayola Digital Light Designer here, but we wanted to add it to the list of new toys for nine year old girls in 2012.

One of the cool things about it is that you can save the designs and bring them back at a later date. It is important to point out that you need to always have it on a flat surface or it will not work. (No putting it in your lap curled up in your favorite chair!) Still, it may be something that some children get into. For the really artistic nine year old girls, however, tried and true art supplies may be a better investment in our opinion. (Click here to buy.)

Best Toys for 4 Year Old Boys for Christmas 2012

Sat, 10/27/2012 - 1:08am

Top Toys 2012

Looking for the Best Toys for 4 Year Old Boys this Christmas? While we have a page that goes over some of the favorite toys of all time for this age group, we wanted to put together a special page of the top toys in 2012 for boys age four years old.

From electronic learning toys to video games to baseballs and footballs to puzzles and learning toys, we have a look at what is on the top of a lot of lists in 2012. Be sure to leave a comment below if you think we forgot something.

LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer

[boys5toys1]

This is available for around $100 currently, although if you shop around you may be able to find a bundle with a game or two as well as accessories for a little more money.  Primarily for ages 3 to 9 years old, this is a “toy” that will grow with them for at least a year or two.

Let’s be honest, by then there will be the Super Leappad42 Explorer! In all seriousness, because of the apps you can get for this, it will probably be played with for more than just a week or two. Just make sure you get rechargeable batteries because it is going to eat through them like Cookie Monster in a Mrs. Fields warehouse. (Click Here to Buy)

Vtech Switch & Go Dinos – Tonn the Stegosaurus Dinosaur

[boys5toys2]

Vtech is a name you most likely know and trust. Not all their products are the best, but the new Switch & Go Dinos (basically, they “transform” from dinosaurs to cars and back, although they probably can’t use that term.)

There is actually a good selection of different dinosaurs in the collection. We really like the yellow Tonn the Stegosaurus Dinosaur. We’re not sure how much he would act like Bumblebee if the Switch & Go Dinos had their own television show, but we think boys age 3 to 8 years old will like this toy that is priced under $20 most places. (Click Here to Get Current Price.)

Fisher-Price Master Moves Mickey

[boys5toys3]

First there was Rock Star Mickey and Dance Star Mickey. Now there is M3 – Master Moves Mickey with a bit of a Breakdancin’ spin. The toy is safe for boys age 2 to 6 years old. Any older than that and they will probably not have much interest in this toy past five or ten minutes at the most.

Still, for four year old boys who like Mickey Mouse (or break dancing) this ia great idea. It lists for around $80, but if you shop around you should be able to find it for around $50 some places. (Be sure to look for it on Black Friday 2012 as well!) Click Here to Order Now

WWE Brawlin’ Buddies John Cena Plush Figure

[boys5toys4]

Soft enough to squeeze but still tough enough to take some wrestling action, this plush wrestler toy is intended for boys age 3 to 8 years old. This one actually has John Cena’s real voice, so if your little boy is a fan of wrestling, he’s going to get a kick out of this. At $25 to $35 the price is a bit high in our opinion, but when you consider all the hours of play that you will get from the toy, it’s a pretty good value overall.

The toy is 16″ and you can get other wrestling superstars as well. Three non-standard batteries are required, but they are included so you do not need to worry about this – at least right away. You may want to do some research on getting replacement batteries, however, especially if you think the toy is going to be popular with your four year old boy. (Click Here to Learn More)

Best Children’s Books for Bedtime and Sleeping Help

Thu, 10/25/2012 - 11:42pm

Top Toys 2012

Having trouble with bedtime? You are NOT alone. This is something that many (if not all) parents must deal with at some point. To help, we have some of the best Children’s books for bedtime.

Skip ahead to the section that interests you most or browse our entire collection of the best bedtime books. If you have any suggestions, be sure to leave a comment below and let us know! If there’s enough interest, we may expand the list.

Best Bedtime Books for Babies and Toddlers

Getting a baby to sleep is sometimes not about the story you are reading as much as the fact you are paying some attention to them. In fact, if your voice is soothing enough, you may be able to read them the phone book to have them drift off to sleep. Luckily, there are some books out there to help put babies to sleep so you don’t end up reading a list of names!

Good Night, Gorilla

[bedbook1]

This is a classic from Peggy Rathmann. It is a very basic story that does not take a long time to read – which is great for bedtime – but it is funny and helps with recognition and naming of different types of animals. On top of that, there’s a sense of humor to the book, which small children can get into. Babies will love the art while older children may actually follow the simple story. The book is almost wordless, but the expressive art and attention to the small details in the book is sure to make it a favorite of children and adults.

Good Night, Little Bear

[bedbook2]

Written by Patsy Scarry and illustrated by Richard Scarry, this is a classic children’s story that deals with bedtime for small children. It is really good for toddlers. While getting little bear ready for bed, papa bear seems to misplace his child! Oh noes! In all seriousness, this silly story may be just the thing to subtly walk a child through the routine of getting ready for bedtime.

  Bedtime Books for Elementary Children

For children who are starting school – preschool or kindergarten – getting enough sleep is more important than ever before in their little life. While there are a lot of books for adults on the science of sleep for children (we look at some of these below), these books tackle bedtime in an offhand way that really stimulates the imagination.

Dr Seuss’s Sleep Book

[bedbook3]

Even if you have heard of Dr. Suess before, you may not know about this book. It is not as well known as some of his other books – like Cat in the Hat – but it is a somewhat funny story about sleep and going to bed.  With wonderful illustrations and a voice that can only come from Dr. Suess, this is a great bedtime book for school age children who still like to be read to before it is bedtime. Compared to other Suess books, this one is almost totally about the imagination rather than a particular character or situation. We think it’s a good addition to any growing bedtime book collection.

10 Minutes Till Bedtime -

[bedbook4]

Written by Peggy Rathmann – who did Goodnight, Gorilla – has a book that is different but in many ways a lot better according to some parents – and children. It should be noted that this book has no-story – well, not a story in words. The only real words are a countdown to bedtime. However, the pictures are truly worth a thousand words (or more) each. Because of the lack of actual story and a triggering of the imagination, it may be possible to get your little one to sleep. One of the really cool things about this book is that each time you go through it you seem to notice something a little different. This is part of the beauty of the book – one your little one may fall in love with and want to hear every night.

Best Sleep Training Books

For toddlers – and even older children – bedtime can be a battle to say the least. There are quite a few books out there – for parents and children – about getting ready for bed and sleep. We are going to take a look at both so that you can attack the problem from as many angles as you can and get your precious angels (or little monsters) to sleep!

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child

[bedbook5]

This was written by Dr. Marc Weissbluth, who knows quite a bit about children and sleeping problems. He is a pediatrician and father of four, which gives him a good perspective when it comes to problems with children.  “I love Dr. Weissbluth’s philosophy that the most important thing to have is a well-rested family. And fortunately, thanks to this book, most days (and nights) we do!” wrote Cindy Crawford in the foreword to the book. Weissbluth deals mostly with babies and small children, so this may be best for new or expecting parents who want to avoid any potential problems with sleeping.

Solve your Child’s sleep Problems

[bedbook6]

Written by Richard Ferber M.D., this book has been recommended by quite a few parents who have had trouble with their child not sleeping. Because Ferber is a doctor that has dealt with children, he knows what he is talking about and has helped a lot of children get a better night of rest. Full of facts and practical tips and advice, this book can go a long way in making sure everyone in the house is able to achieve a full night of rest. The book is very easy to read overall, and we think you’re going to get some use out of it when trying to deal with sleeping problems.

Best Bedtime Stories

Once the bedtime lessons have been hammered home with a hundred or more readings, you may just want a nice, short story that you can read before bedtime. The following books fit the bill nicely. If you want a book with a good bedtime story, we can help. Some of these also contain situations or lessons that will help with the battle for bedtime in your house.

The Napping House

[bedbook7]

The Napping House was written by Audrey Wood and is illustrated by Don Wood. This makes a pretty good general bedtime story – or a nap time story – because it deals with a house where everyone is napping. Well, everyone is napping except for one tiny flea – who bites a mouse and then… you get the picture.

The book is full of rhymes, but they tend to flow quite well, giving it a melody which may help little ones fall asleep faster. The story is a big silly, but in a very fun way. This book is recommended for ages 4 and up, although some smaller children may get a kick out of it as well.

How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?

[bedbook8]

If your little one loves dinosaurs – or you think they may learn to love dinosaurs – this is a great book. It features a dino who does not want to go to bed. Primarily for ages four years old and up, it also has a lot of really cool illustrations.  Jane Yolen is the author and Mark Teague the illustrator. Together, they make a pretty wonderful team.

The book contains every imaginable excuse for NOT going to bed. The story is silly (like a lot of others on our list), but the way it is told may drive home the point that a bedtime battle every night is not really necessary if there are enough hugs and kisses involved. The book is funny and there are a lot of small details that will keep it a favorite for many moons and many bedtimes.

Llama Llama Red Pajama

[bedbook9]

This is another classic bedtime book about an animal who does not want to go to sleep. The reasons listed will most likely be some of the same your child uses to try to bypass bedtime. The heartwarming picturebook was written and illustrated by Anna Dewdney.

The book is good in that the ending has Momma Llama explaining that sometimes she may be too busy to come right away all the time but that didn’t mean she didn’t love Llama Llama. A pretty good listen for children of all ages.  The book is for ages 3 and older. It’s a good choice up until first grade for most children.

PS3, PS Move, PSP, PS Vita: Sony Video Game Consoles

Tue, 10/23/2012 - 7:33pm

Top Toys 2012

If someone on your holiday shopping list is into video games and you are trying to determine the best game console to get them, we are here to help. We are going to take a closer look at what is available from Sony – both for in-home use as well as their popular portable gaming systems. If you are confused about all the Sony Playstation 3 options out there, we are here to help.

Sony Gaming Systems

Sony has been around a while now and they are a favorite gaming system of many. The Playstation 3 is truly a work of art when it comes to design on the outside, but it’s all the graphics power and memory storage on the inside that truly make it a gem. And with the ability to play Blu Ray discs and connect online (including streaming services like Netflix), it’s a great entertainment investment for the whole family.

Here are the main offerings from Sony in 2012 for gaming consoles. We are not going to list ALL of them as there are quite a few bundles out there. You may want to spend some time looking at those to see if there is one that has a game you know your child will love.

  • PlayStation 3 320GB System – This is the baseline when it comes to memory capacity on the new systems. This is the amount of data storage (things like saved games) the console can hold without using memory cards. Obviously, the more you get the better. The first generation Playstation 3 consoles had 40 GB to 80 GB and there are now some bundles that have 500 GB of storage for the ultimate gamer. You will want to shop around so that you can find the most memory for the best price.  For a 250 GB PS 3 you should expect to pay around $300, although the exact price will vary. You can get one with less memory for about $200.  This is the basic console with none of the extras that we will be looking at next. There is also a SLIM version out there.
  • Playstation 3 Move – This is additional hardware you can get to allow the PS3 to act like the Nintendo Wii with motion sensor technology. If you are buying a new gaming system you can get one with a Move bundle that will have everything you need. If you already have a PS3, you can get a bundle with just the basic accessories – the eye for tracking motion and one controller – and then add more as needed. Not all games work with Playstation 3 Move, but it is easy to find out which ones do and do not. This is a great way to add a little physical activity to game playing. The “eye” usually runs around $20 by itself with each controller about another $20. You can find bundles with everything you need – including a game or two – if you look around.
  • PlayStation Portable 3000 Core Pack System – This sleek Piano Black portable gaming console is priced just over $100, although you can bundle to get a better deal. As with the normal Playstation 3, you can listen to MP3 tracks and even watch videos. It should be noted that this is NOT the newest portable gaming unit from Sony. We are going to look at that next. Still, for the price, there are a lot of great games that this can play and we think it’s worth the money for gamers on the go. If you take a lot of long road trips, it’s a wonderful idea.
  • PlayStation Vita – As with many Sony products and offerings, you have a lot of options here. You want to make sure you understand them so you get what you are wanting. There is a WiFi version that will connect to the Internet over a Wireless connection, but there is ALSO a 3G / WiFi version that will work using the AT&T 3G network when a wireless hotspot is not available. This means you can connect almost anywhere, which is nice. There is a monthly charge for the 3G capability, however, that you have to work out with the phone company. Either way, the new PS Vita is absolutely stunning in a lot of ways. From the design to all the great features, there is a lot to love. The price is about the same as a Sony PS3 home console, so this is something to keep in mind. This is the latest and greatest from Sony so you should expect it on a lot of Christmas lists this year.

Here is a look at some of the popular Playstation 3 bundles available.

What’s Next?

We will be taking a look at other video game companies – Microsoft and Nintendo – to explain their offerings a little better. Additionally, we plan on having a wrap-up post that will compare the three major gaming consoles head-to-head. Stay tuned!

Musical Instruments for Kids in 2012

Mon, 10/22/2012 - 8:04pm

Top Toys 2012

If you are looking for a great idea for a Christmas gift this year, you might want to think about a toy instrument. Not every parent may want music toys in the house – especially if they’re loud – but they can be a great way to introduce children to music and the different musical instruments that are out there. Then there’s electronic music with games, apps and software. There has never been a better time to be into music.

To help you out, we have put together a list of some of the best toy instruments out there so that you can get the most for your money. These are not the only music toys for kids out there, but our list should give you a good place to start if you know a child who is interested in music and you want to get them the perfect gift.

Browse below for some ideas for different age groups.

Music Instruments for Babies and Toddlers

We are first going to look at music toys for babies to first introduce them to music as well as something for toddler boys or girls who are musical by nature.

LeapFrog Learn & Groove Counting Maracas

[music3]

Ages: 6 Months to 3 Years Old

There are NOT your average maracas. They have three ways for babies to play: Counting, Colors and Music Play learning modes. They can help introduce your baby to colors as well as other vocabulary and counting from one to ten in both English and Spanish. You will need 3 AA batteries which are included, however you might want to invest in some rechargeable batteries when you get this.

You might also consider these:

Munchkin Mozart Magic Cube

[music2]

Ages: 1 to 4 Years Old

If you want something a little more high-tech, this is the way to go. It is not that expensive and is made from durable plastic. You are going to need 3 AA batteries – you should consider getting rechargeable batteries – but it is great fun for babies and toddlers alike. Different sides represent a harp, a French horn, a piano, a flute, and a violin. There’s also an orchestra mode that combines all of them.

If you get this, you might also consider:

Musical Instruments for Young Children

This is still a very good age for children to begin an instrument.

37-Key Elite Baby Grand – Black

[music1]

Ages: 3 to 9 Years Old

This is about half the size of an adult piano and is available for around $150 online at Amazon. Schoenhut Piano Company has been around a while and now they are concentrating on pianos that are especially made for smaller children – when learning music is a lot easier.  There have been some reviews online that mention the product is made in China – which may be why it’s available so cheaply – but this is something for you to consider. If this seems like too much money, there’s also the Schoenhut 25-Key My First Piano II, for around $70.

Here are some additional ideas to consider if purchasing this.

Mendini 4/4 MV300 Solid Wood Violin With Extras

[music4]

Ages: 5+

The really great thing about this is that it pretty much comes with all the basics any budding violinist will need to get started.  While it is normally priced around $200, you may be able to find it for $60 or so if you shop around online or check at Amazon.

It is a 4/4 – full size – wood violin with extras included for students. While it is not professional quality by any means, it is great for those beginning with the violin who need something to practice with.

It is never too late for a child to become interested in music. These are a couple ideas for musical instruments for tweens and teens.

Starcaster Natural Acoustic Guitar Kit

[music5]

Ages: 8+ Years Old

There’s just something about learning the guitar that some people pick up on at some point in their life. This is a great way to introduce a boy or girl to the guitar. It’s a kit that has everything you need – including a high quality guitar. While not the best guitar out there by any means, it is a good place to start. And while your child may want an electric guitar, this is an easier (and cheaper) way to start and see if they stick with it or not.

Best Toys for 4 Year Old Girls in 2012

Sun, 10/21/2012 - 12:22am

Top Toys 2012

We are going to take a look at some of the Best Toys for 4 Year Old Girls. Whether you are buying for your own daughter or someone else, these ideas will help you find the perfect gift for any girl age four years old.

LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer Disney Princess Bundle

[girls4a]

Yes, you can get this kids tablet in pink – or even green for active outdoor girls (or those who like green more than pink) – but the LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer Disney Princess Bundle is a wonderful way to make a four year old girl quite happy this Christmas.

If you have the original LeapPad Explorer (which you can get cheaper now), you will be happy to know that the LeapPad2 takes care of some of the major problems of the first generation of this tablet for kids. It is super durable and is designed to move along with your child. For example, you need to tilt and move it for some of the games.

The addition of the Disney Princess pack is great for little girls who are already into them. If you get this, spend the extra money on the recharger (around $50 extra) because this BURNS through batteries quickly. You might also get 4 AA rechargeable batteries.

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Standing Easel

[girls4b]

For little girls who may be an aspiring artist – there can never be enough in the world – this easel set from Melissa & Doug is put together well and has a reasonable price for the quality. You can generally find it for anywhere from $50 up to $80 depending on where you get it.

It comes with quite a few art accessories needed for aspiring artists. Also, it folds up for easier storage when not in use. Having said that, you can also leave it set-up all the time if you have an area dedicated to art or play. What is cool about this is that you get a lot of use out of it without spending on art supplies! It features double sided chalk and dry erase-boards.

Now, before you freak out, you should realize that you can easily take a digital picture of their artwork so that it can be saved before they erase it if you want. This makes it easy to give them a Flickr page or somewhere else on the web to show off their art work. Yes, you can even upload the art photos to Facebook for the whole family and friends list! Worth the money? We think so.

LEGO DUPLO Disney Princess Snow White’s Cottage

[girls4c]

If you want to test if the girl you are buying for is going to possibly like LEGO sets in the future, you can get this simple LEGO DUPLO set that is safe for four year old girls. And if they’re into Disney Princesses, they’re going to get a kick out of the fact that it is Snow White and her cottage.

This is a bright and cheerful Duplo LEGO set that comes with 28 Big  pieces great for small hands. At the same time, the set has quite a bit of details. It also comes with a Snow White figure and a white rabbit – one of the forest creatures.

This set has gotten great reviews from parents and children. It is not too difficult to put together, but it will give them a little test – while they’re having fun, of course. And once it’s set-up it can be good for hours and hours of pretend play.

Fisher-Price Little People Disney Princess Songs Palace

[girls4d]

Yes, we have yet another Disney Princess toy, but there are quite a few four year old girls out there who are getting into them in a big way. So, this is a Fisher Price Little People set that is themed for the princesses from Disney, including Cinderella and Snow White.

It’s a bit pricey at around $50, but when you consider the hours and hours of pretend play that can be had with it, the price doesn’t seem that high.

There is one thing you should know – it IS going to take a bit of time to put together. You should give yourself plenty of time – and have the right tools – so that you can get it built BEFORE it’s time to open presents.
