Preparing for Tournament
The past month or two the students have been preparing for our annual trip to St. Louis to attend the Kuk Sool Won tournament there. It is a very competitive tournament with competitors from all over the country and even Canada. It is a great experience for the students since they get to meet people from all over who are doing the same things that they do, and know some of the same weird stuff that they know. It's a similar experience for a martial artist as tail-gating is to the football fan, or the Star Trek convention is for the techno geek.
Besides the camaraderie, students will be exposed to slightly different styles within our martial arts system. That's always good because they come back and ask me why other people do this or that differently, and it makes me think and evaluate things as well.
Everyone will meet the high ranking masters, chief masters, and of course the founder of our art Kuk Sa Nim. He loves to have his picture taken with the children and autograph their textbooks for them too. He has spent his life learning and systematizing the martial arts of Korea . He does this not only so that they can be passed down and preserved, but also because it is so beneficial to the practitioners who do this. Any martial artist (not just our style) will tell you that the physical, mental and spiritual benefits that they have gained are virtually priceless to them and they wouldn't trade them for anything. I think that Kuk Sool artists feel this particularly strongly.
If anyone reading this would like to support the students in their trip, they are having a car wash this Saturday (April 21st) from 9:00am to 3:00pm. I've posted it in the Events section of MFP if you want to bookmark it. It would really help them out, and in return you'll get a shiny clean car and they'll even demonstrate what they are learning for you! It's sure to be a good time for everyone. This is being held at the school, which is at the corner of Nichols and White River Boulevard, diagonally across from West Side Park.
The tournament is next weekend and I'll leave another blog entry to let you know how we did!

how did the tournament go?
I am more than a conqueror though Christ. Romans 8:37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
