Ivy Tech Community College Trustees Ratify Next President
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Trustees of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana ratified the appointment of Thomas J. Snyder as the next president of the state’s community college in a unanimous 14-0 vote at their scheduled April meeting. He will oversee the operations of the state’s second largest postsecondary institution of higher education and also serve as the president of the Ivy Tech Foundation starting July 1, 2007.
Snyder served as the President of Delco Remy International, INC in Anderson Indiana from 1994-2006 and is currently the Chairman of the Flagship Energy Systems Center (FESC) in Anderson. During his 11 years with Delco Remy International he established a new business model and diversified the company from a captive General Motors supplier to a global leader in truck, off road and aftermarket products, increasing the company in size from $500 million to over $1.3 billion in sales and worldwide employment from 1,500 to 6,000.
Snyder will replace Gerald I. Lamkin, who announced that he would step down as President on June 30, 2007.
“I am anxious to get around the state to visit all 23 of the Ivy Tech Community College campuses and meet the leadership and faculty at each of our regional locations and the leaders of those communities, to learn what Ivy Tech can do for them,” Snyder said. “I look forward to continuing to discuss with the current administration, business leaders and other college and university presidents about how Ivy Tech can help in improving the educational attainment level of Hoosiers throughout Indiana. Ivy Tech is vital to the economic and workforce development of our state.”
“It certainly is an honor to take the reigns from a true legend in higher education in Jerry Lamkin. I look forward to working with him and our state board of trustees to continue to ensure that Ivy Tech Community College is serving the needs of its students our communities.”
Snyder was the 2006 Co-Chair of the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership and is currently Co-Chair of the new Advanced Manufacturing/Logistics initiative in central Indiana along with Martin Jischke of Purdue University and Dennis Oklak of Duke Realty.
While at Delco Remy, Snyder maintained three Indiana operations including Remy Headquarters and Technical Center (Anderson, IN), Franklin Power (Franklin, IN) and Locomotive Products (Peru, IN) which totaled nearly 1,000 employees in Indiana. In the face of a changing competitive environment he also helped Delco Remy enter the global remanufacturing business, completing 17 acquisitions and six joint ventures and beginning operations in 12 countries, including Hungary, Poland and China.
Snyder’s career at General Motors Corporation saw him hold positions in engineering and marketing for products including maintenance free-batteries, Magnequench magnets and electric vehicle components.
He graduated from Kettering University, formerly General Motors Institute in 1967, with a degree in mechanical engineering. Snyder also holds a master’s degree in business administration from Indiana University.
Snyder served six years in Air Force R & D with assignments at Vandenberg and Andrews Air Force Bases and the Pentagon.
He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Indiana State Chamber, a member of the Executive Council of the Saint Theodore Guerin High School in Noblesville, a board member of the Paramount Theatre restoration in Anderson, and a member of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
His wife, Bobbette, is Executive Director of the Leadership Academy of Madison County and they have four children.
