Youth Workers Still Have Time to Register for Innovative Training to Encourage Youth Dialogue
Training Open to Muncie Area Youth Organizations and Students Interested in Working with Youth
MUNCIE, IN – The Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) is offering a workshop to help Muncie area youth-serving professionals use interactive theater techniques to raise awareness about social issues such as substance abuse or diversity and prompt discussions among youth, families and parents.
Youth workers, teachers, community leaders, youth ministers and others who impact the lives of youth in the Muncie area can register for the workshop, “All The World’s A Stage: Creative Techniques to Engage Youth in Social Change,” to be presented from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. May 9 at the Cornerstone Center for the Arts, 520 East Main Street.
Interactive theater techniques can be used to examine challenging issues and find solutions to social problems. Youth are faced with social injustices every day – from peer pressure at the local high school to bullying at the neighborhood playground. Traditional educational methods such as lectures, brochures, and videos allow audiences to be passive. However, interactive theater activities provide youth workers with the opportunity to engage youth in experiential learning.
“All The World’s A Stage” focuses on how to conduct theater games, dialogue-building exercises and interactive performances to encourage discussions among youth. Participants will be able to use the skills they acquire with middle and high school students, families and even adult groups of parents, teachers or other youth workers.
The instructor is Katherine Burke, who has created and developed workshops used internationally to facilitate arts-based civic dialogue.
This workshop will also be presented in Bloomington, Indianapolis, and West Lafayette. For more information about the workshops in those cities, go to www.iyi.org.
Individuals can register for the training online at www.iyi.org, download an application from IYI’s Web site, or call IYI at 800-343-7060. Continuing Education Hours through the National Association of Social Workers are available for the workshop. The cost of the training is $40.
This training is supported in part by the Clowes Fund and the Nicholas H. Noyes, Jr., Memorial Foundation.
The Indiana Youth Institute promotes the healthy development of children and youth by serving the institutions and people of Indiana who work on their behalf.
