Indiana State Police Awards Ceremony Honors Six from Peru Post
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indiana State Police Department held its first annual Awards and Recognition Ceremony Tuesday in Indianapolis. The ceremony honored and recognized 103 individuals from around the state for their dedication to service, bravery and devotion to the department and the citizens of Indiana. Those individuals chosen were employees of the Indiana State Police Department, other public safety officials and citizens of Indiana.
The idea for this event was conceived by Indiana State Police Superintendent Paul Whitesell, Ph.D., Superintendent Whitesell felt the need to publicly recognize the achievements and deeds of self sacrifice and accomplishment that all too often go without the proper recognition.
The Indiana State Police Post at Peru had six recipients receiving awards. Those individuals and their accomplishment are as follows:
Master Trooper Jan Maller: Trooper of the District Award was presented to Master Trooper Maller for his dedication to his job, traffic and criminal enforcement, community involvement, instructor ratings, specialty assignments and other services performed for the department beyond normal expectations. He was selected by the command staff at the Peru District. Maller is a 20 year veteran of the Indiana State Police. Trooper Maller patrols Wabash County.
Sergeant Tim Miller: Life Saving Award was presented to Sergeant Miller for his actions on June 10, 2006. On that date, Sergeant Miller and Officer Sean Nelson of the Galveston Police Department responded to a 911 call placed from a Miami County home of a person reported to be attempting suicide. Once at the home, Sergeant Miller determined the suicidal person was sitting in a passenger car, engine running, in a locked garage. With the aid of Galveston Police Officer Sean Nelson, they both made forced entry into the carbon-monoxide filled garage. Between Sergeant Miller and Officer Nelson it took three attempts in entering the fume laden garage before they could access the victim, turn off the idling car, and remove the victim from the poisonous atmosphere. The actions of Sergeant Miller and Officer Nelson displayed their unwavering dedication to duty and mankind, not just once or twice, but by the three times they placed themselves in harms way to save a fellow citizen. Sergeant Miller is a 21 year veteran of the Indiana State Police. He is assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division and supervises detectives working from the Indiana State Police Post in Peru.
Trooper Ezariah Bricknell: Life Award was presented to Trooper Bricknell for his commitment to DUI enforcement. He arrested 51 impaired drivers in 2006. This was the highest total at the Indiana State Police Post in Peru. Trooper Bricknell is a two year veteran who patrols Cass County.
Three civilian employees working from the Indiana State Police Post in Peru received the Meritorious Service Award for consistent attention to duty, diligence, good judgment, and responsibility during the performance of their duties. These individuals have set the example for other members of the department to follow. They are Investigative Secretary Cathy Shuler of Miami County, a 20 year member of the department; Mechanic Ron Musall of Miami County, a 25 year member of the department; Post Secretary Jodie Miller, of Cass County, a seven year member of the department.
“Our people work hard everyday serving the citizens of Indiana,†stated Lieutenant Mike Nichols, Commander of the Indiana State Police Post at Peru.†I am proud of the quality work they perform on a daily basis. They are very deserving of the recognition bestowed upon them.â€
