Thirteen Downtown Anderson Properties Due for Facade Facelifts
ANDERSON, IN - Anderson Mayor Kevin S .Smith announced yesterday another 13 downtown properties that will receive exterior upgrades this summer, thanks to a Downtown Façade Program. The program is coordinated by the city’s Community Development office.
Exterior upgrades by the 13 winning applicants will bring a total private investment of $332,000 and city investment of $138,000 into the downtown. This program requires downtown business owners to contribute a 50% match, dollar-for-dollar, in order to obtain a forgivable loan to restore the façade of their building. Examples may include adding new shutters, entryways, flower boxes, windows, parking lot improvements, green space, large flowerpots, banners, and a variety of other exterior improvements.
In 2006, the Downtown Facade Program assisted ten businesses with a proposed investment of $145,000.
“Revitalization of Central Anderson and job creation are focuses of our plan to rebuild this city,” said Mayor Smith. “These awards support both of these principles. In 2005, we adopted the first Comprehensive Plan in 40 years. Key elements of the Comprehensive Plan in the downtown are preservation and enhancement of its aesthetic quality and historically significant character.”
Approvals were made based upon a formal ranking process assigning point values for the owners ability to leverage funds, location of the building, overall design/aesthetics, and historic significance, noted Katie Goar, Director of Community Development and Long Range Planning.
