Sen. Pat Miller to Author Legislation to Address Election Problems

Indianapolis Senator says Tuesday’s Marion County problems must not happen again

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - In the wake of what some are calling the most confusing day in Marion County election history, Sen. Pat Miller (R-Indianapolis) says she will seek a state review and author legislation next year aimed at preventing future disenfranchisement of voters.

“I am disappointed that such numerous and severe problems arose in Tuesday’s election and that so many voters were actually prohibited from exercising one of their most fundamental rights – the right to vote.” Miller said.

Tuesday’s election problems were reportedly widespread. In Franklin Township, one precinct in Miller’s Senate district didn’t open until after 5 p.m., allowing voters less than one hour to cast ballots. “I am certain many voters did not have the option to come back time and again throughout the work day to see if their precincts were up and running,” Miller said.

Today, Miller asked Senate President Pro-Tem David Long (R-Fort Wayne) – also chairman of the Legislative Council – to place this issue for study before a legislative interim study committee. The study will focus on election issues statewide as well as those in Marion County.

“We will need extensive background information on what went wrong and why prior to next year’s session. I encourage voters to contact me with their concerns. Hearing from voters will help us protect the precious right of each individual to cast his or her vote.”

Miller said residents may contact her via her Senate e-mail address: S32@in.gov or at her Senate office 317-232-9489.
