Governor Mitch Daniels Denies Lambert Clemency Request

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Governor Mitch Daniels has concluded his review of the case of Michael Lambert and has denied his petition for clemency.

Lambert was sentenced to death in 1992 for the murder of Muncie Police Officer Gregg Winters. On December 28, 1990, Lambert was arrested for public intoxication. While in the back seat, he pulled out a hidden gun and shot Officer Winters five times in the head. Winters died a week and a half later.

Lambert is scheduled to be executed after midnight on June 15 at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City. If Lambert is executed early Friday morning as scheduled, it would be the second execution this year in Indiana. On May 4, David Leon Woods was executed for killing 77-year-old Juan Placencia.

Last Monday, Lambert's lawyers filed a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court asking it to block the execution. The petition hasn't been answered yet.
