President Commutes Scooter Libby's Sentence
Well, we knew it would happen, but I did not think so soon. President Bush had commuted Scooter Libby's sentence. Not a pardon. Libby will still have to pay the fine and serve a period of probation, but he will not go to jail.
Once again, the adage is proved. Justice is not equal for everyone. If you have friends in high places, you get a special deal. For those interested, Libby was convicted of the very same crime for which enraged conservatives impeached Bill Clinton. They simply have no honor.
I am very angry. If we don't make them pay at the polls next election, we deserve what we get.

...but what can MFP as a community do to help? Maybe keep better records of who is getting into office then forgetting promises? A Tip of the Hat and Wag of the Finger column?

Re: Libby
Interesting comment here, Bob. So how much time did President Clinton serve for perjury? None.
How much money did he pay in fines? None.
Clinton Perjury
Bob Hertzog
Wait a minute THM. There's a big difference here. Clinton was never convicted of perjury. Libby was! The difference is that Libby was tried, convicted, and sentenced. Clinton was accused (as part of an impeachment) and tried according to our constitution and not convicted. In our ethic people are considered not guilty until convicted in a court of law. Now Clinton may have done it but he has never been given his day in court and was never convicted... Indeed, after he left office, the prosecutor that had jurisdiction in Clinton's case, declined to pursue the charge. So, how much jail time should Clinton get for a crime of which he was never convicted? Libby had his day in court. He presented his best argument for defense and a jury of his peers unanimously rejected it.
What can we do
Bob Hertzog
A good idea, Paul, but I think it needs more than a finger wag. Every elected official needs a monthly score card. One column with the promises made during the campaign. Second column accomplishments. It needs to be done with hard facts, objectively, with no party bias, and with rigor, like a researcher conducting an experiment. The score card needs to be broadcasts widly in the politician's district.
Clinton's Pardons
....and then, there were his pardons.
clinton's Pardons?
Bob Hertzog
We have got to get over Clinton. Some of his pardons, particularly Mark Rich, were despicable. But, Clinton is not president now, Bush is. Just because Clinton did wrong does not give Bush a free pass to behave badly. Clinton is a red herring. We must judge Bush on what he did and not in comparison to Clinton. Remember, Bush's campaign promise to bring honor back to the White House. Does anyone think this commutation does that?
