Seventh Annual Great Greenway Tour Adds Miles with Extended Trail
MUNCIE, IN - Bicyclists and families from across the Midwest will be in Muncie for the 7th annual Great Greenway tour on July 28. It might be the smooth 12-foot wide paved trail or it could be the legendary home-made cookies, but attendance in the ride has grown each year since it started in 2001. The 2006 edition of the ride saw 300 riders turn out for the event.
“This bike tour has grown into a tradition for cyclists in Indiana. The Cardinal Greenway is a wonderful place to ride and we love to share it with people from all over” said Mark Lohmar, president of the Delaware Cycling Club.
Cyclists can choose from several routes including 20, 30, 40, 50, 85 or even 100 and all the way to 114 miles.  Ambitious peddlers can travel the entire trail including the newest section of the greenway near Losantville. That adds 7 more miles of newly paved trail since last year’s Great Greenway Tour. The 114 mile option for the long distance riders is also new this year.
Muncie's Delaware Cycling Club in cooperation with the Anderson Spoke and Wheel Club is organizing the ride.  “I'm very excited about this year's Great Greenway
Tour. We are enjoying the help of the greenway staff with registrations, and already are way ahead of last year's registrations,” Lohmar said.
A $20 registration provides maps, marked routes, food and refreshments including tasty homemade cookies. Garfield the cat and his pal Odie are expected to make an appearance along with live music for entertainment. Local bike shops plan service and sales as well as door prizes.
Registration forms can be picked up at area bicycle shops or on the World Wide Web at http://www.delawarecyclingclub.com/.
Registration is from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 am. Tour begins at 8:00. Those riding the 100 and 114 mile route should start by 8:00 a.m.
Indiana's longest paved rail trail was formerly a section of the CSX railway line. The Cardinal Greenway is a rails‑to‑trails recreational corridor with over 37 miles of a 12‑foot wide asphalt surface with a crushed limestone shoulder on each side. The trail is capable of accommodating multiple users simultaneously.
Funds from the tour will benefit The Cardinal Greenway and the Indiana Bicycle Coalition.                  Â
