LPIN: Property Tax Fiasco Requires Bold Solution
INDIANA - The Libertarian Party of Indiana has worked for many years to advise the citizens of Indiana, as well as their state and local officials, that Indiana's reliance on property taxes was leading to a crisis point.
In 1999, Andrew Horning, the Libertarian candidate for Mayor of Indianapolis, introduced this issue into the public debate. In 2001 the LPIN proposed a simple plan that would have taken the first steps towards eliminating property taxes in Indiana while making existing taxes more fair.
"The writing has been on the wall for years." said Todd Singer, Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Indiana. "It's a human tragedy that so many people have had to lose their homes to get the Republican and Democratic politicians in Indianapolis to even talk about this serious issue."
"We're encouraged to see that voters have now realized that the current system is unfair and unworkable. Our challenge now is to ensure that we focus on real solutions, not band-aids that will only delay the suffering of Hoosiers until after the next election."
"The fundamental problem is that the state and local governments keep growing even as these taxes are pushing more jobs from Indiana."
"We applaud Andrew Horning and Hoosiers for Fair Taxation for keeping the property tax issue at the forefront of the public debate. Many Libertarians are involved in this effort, and the Libertarian Party of Indiana is supporting this movement in every way possible."
"As Libertarians, we always have, and always will support any effort to make government more accountable to the citizens of Indiana."
