Senator Young Calls for Immediate Action on Property Tax Crises
Young Says “Special Session might be needed if Governor does not act”
MILLTOWN, IN - In an April 28, 2007 letter Senate Minority Leader and Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Richard Young, warned Governor Daniels of the looming property tax issue, “The foundational security of homeownership is at risk as Hoosier homeowners face unpredictable increases in property tax costs again this year.”
Governor Daniels never responded to the letter.
“The Governor didn’t respond to my letter regarding Indiana’s property tax problems, and today homeowners across Indiana are facing huge property tax bills,” said Democratic leader and democratic gubernatorial candidate Richard Young.
The letter discussed some of the problems linked to the property tax fluctuations, “The problems that we now face have not developed without warning. During the passage of the 2005 biennial budget, the Senate Democratic Caucus expressed concerns that the plan insufficiently funded the property tax replacement credits and shifted the unreasonable pressure to local leaders. Going back even further, local units and homeowners are still waiting for the property tax relief they were promised when increases in the state sales tax were approved in 1973 and again in 2002.”
Senate Democratic leader Young continued, “The Governor has ignored the property tax problems in Indiana long enough. It’s time for him to listen to those of us who have been calling for substantial reform. He should either provide the leadership he promised to Hoosiers, or get out of the way and let us help the homeowners.”
Regarding a special legislative session Democratic gubernatorial candidate Young stated, “A special session will be costly but the taxpayers are already paying for Governor Daniels’ broken promises. If a special session is called I will work hard to provide relief that homeowners deserve.”
