Ford Model T Centennial T Party Coming to Indiana in July 2008
RICHMOND, IN - The world’s largest birthday party for the Car of the Century, the Model T Ford, is coming to Wayne County, Indiana July 21-26, 2008. The Centennial T Party will celebrate the 1908 introduction of the car that changed the world. Hailed as the first affordable automobile, Henry Ford’s car literally “put America on wheels.”
The Wayne County, Indiana Fairgrounds will serve as headquarters for the largest gathering of Model Ts since they left the factory. At least 1,000 cars and between 2,000 and 3,000 people are expected to travel from across the U.S. and as far away as New Zealand, Australia, and Germany to participate.
“People don’t realize how many Model T Ford collectors and enthusiasts there are,” said Jay Klehfoth, CEO of the Model T Ford Club of America (MTFCA) based in Centerville. “I’m happy to tell you that when we talk to our members, they are really excited about coming to the heartland of America for the biggest T party of the century!”
The week-long celebration will feature a variety of special events including a vintage airplane fly-in at Hagerstown, an old-time baseball game at McBride Stadium, Model T games, vintage fashion shows, seminars, swap meet, ice cream social, and much more.
Ten driving tours are a main feature of the event and courses are being routed that will bring Model Ts by the hundreds to the backroads and towns of Wayne, Union, Fayette, Henry, Franklin, and Randolph counties in Indiana and Preble County in Ohio. “Model T collectors love to drive their cars and just have a good time,” said Barbara Klehfoth, MTFCA business manager. “The slow pace and open feel of the car gives you a whole different perspective of the road. It’s a pleasure to drive through the beautiful countryside and take in the sights. Plus, we really like to shop and eat, especially ice cream!” she added.
Mary Walker, Wayne County Tourism Executive Director, is excited about the county being selected to host the event. “This is huge for our area,” Walker said. “The Model T Centennial will be one of the largest groups we have hosted and will generate revenues for area hotels, restaurants, retailers, and many other businesses.” She estimates the event’s direct economic impact to this area would be in excess of $1 million dollars.
A volunteer committee is working diligently with the MTFCA to coordinate the myriad of details this event involves. “We will need the help of many people in the community to make the event a success,” commented Klehfoth. “But we promise it will be a lot of fun, whether you volunteer to work, or just come out to participate in the activities and see the Model Ts.”
Anyone interested in further information about the event including can contact the Klehfoths at 765-855-5248 or barbara@mtfca.com.
