Four People Injured After Box-Truck Sideswipes Car During State Police Car Traffic Stop

MARION COUNTY, IN - Wednesday morning, July 25th, at approximately 9:30 a.m., a 2004 International box truck traveling eastbound on I-465 east of Allisonville Road sideswiped a vehicle that was being stopped for a traffic violation by the Indiana State Police.  The box truck forced the car into the trooper who was conducting the traffic stop on the shoulder of I-465.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Trooper Henry Kalina, 40, an 8-year veteran of the state police, had stopped a black 1995 Oldsmobile four-door for a traffic violation.  While Kalina was standing next to the car he had stopped, the box truck that was traveling eastbound sideswiped the car. The truck then pushed the vehicle into Trooper Kalina, who was standing on the passenger side of the vehicle and threw him down an embankment into the ditch.

Trooper Kalina was transported by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.  He was being treated for injuries to his lower extremities and being checked by the medical staff for any other injuries.  His condition was listed as stable but serious. The driver of the Oldsmobile, Katrina Bowen-Davis, 28, of Carmel, Indiana, was also taken to Methodist Hospital  where she is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries.  Another adult female and child were also injured and being treated at Methodist Hospital.  There names are not being released at this time.

According to officers at the scene, Kalina was in an unmarked police car and had his emergency red and blue lights activated during the traffic stop. The driver of the semi, Andrew Yoder, 63, of Geneva, Indiana, was cited for failing to yield the right of way to a stationary emergency vehicle and unsafe lane movement.  The Oldsmobile that was struck by the box-truck suffered extensive damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Indiana State Police want to remind all motorists that they are required by law to yield the right of way to emergency vehicles that are stationary along side the roadway by making a lane change into a lane not adjacent to that of the emergency vehicle.  This includes police, fire, and ambulance vehicles.  It also includes highway workers and roadway safety workers such as wreckers. If changing lanes is not possible or is unsafe, motorists should reduce their speed and pass with caution.

This was the second such incident to occur in the past twenty-four hours.  Late yesterday afternoon, another Trooper was struck during a traffic stop in Daviess County when a semi-tractor trailer struck his vehicle and the vehicle he had stopped.

Questions regarding this release should be directed to Sergeant Ray Poole of the Indiana State Police, Indianapolis District.
