North Central Conference Hosts Leadership Conference for Athletes and Cheerleaders
MUNCIE, IN - The North Central Conference is continuing to emphasize sportsmanship and leadership in student athletes by hosting its fifth annual “Sportsmanship Extravaganza” at the Mill Creek Civic Center in Chesterfield Tuesday, September 18. High schools of the North Central Conference include Anderson, Huntington North, Kokomo, Logansport, Marion, Muncie Central, New Castle, and Richmond.
All eight NCC schools will participate in the “Extravaganza” by sending 20 students from 20 varsity sports and cheerleading to the event. Coaches from each school and guest speakers will help facilitate the activities for the day. Guest speakers include David Leedy, a nationally-known motivational speaker, Don Peslis, an Anderson University professor, and the keynote speech will be delivered by author Harvey H. Alston. Students will enjoy a day of fun-filled activities with lunch provided by Applebee’s.
“North Central Conference leaders believe that the local student-athletes are future leaders and this event will help foster their leadership abilities,” says Muncie Central High School Athletic Director Tom Jarvis. “The Extravaganza’s goals are to better each student, school, and the North Central Conference.” Kami Bronnenburg, CHS gymnastics coach and cheerleader sponsor, will represent Central High School at the Conference, according to Mr. Jarvis.
Leadership communicator, educator, and author Harvey Alston, a member of the National Speakers Association, has taken his personal, proven message, “Be the Best” to literally millions of people. Alston is known for his powerful, soul-searching presentation that uplifts people to a higher standard. Alston has authored four books, including “Be the Best.” Alston has had a career that has spanned diverse positions, from head football coach of Columbus East High School in Ohio to assistant director of student financial aid at the university level to business management positions in the food and restaurant industry.
Dave Leedy has been involved in public schools for over 30 years and was a member of the Sinclair Community College staff for 10 years. He is actively involved in Alcohol and Drug Prevention Programs in Ohio. He was named the “Teacher of the Year” twice in Ohio. He has given over 1,500 speeches to businesses, government, education, and civic groups on motivation, enthusiasm, and self esteem with a humorous approach.
Don Peslis has been an advocate at the local level with his topic ”Pursuing Victory with Honor. “ His Anderson University-based program hits home with young kids and high school-aged athletes in the Madison County area, causing NCC leaders to host Peslis for a second time.
