Muncie Community Schools Board Meeting 9-11-07

MUNCIE, IN - Following the required advertisement of the Muncie Community Schools Proposed 2008 Budget August 28 and September 7 in The Star Press, the MCS Board of School Trustees heard public comment on the 2008 Budget including the Capital Projects Fund Plan and the Bus Replacement Plan. The proposed Budget includes the following areas:

The hearing required no board action as the item was a required step in the budget adoption process. Adoption of the 2008 proposed budget is scheduled to take place at the next Board of School Trustees Meeting September 25, 2007.          

The Board adopted the three-year 2008-2010 Capital Projects Fund Plan resolution as advertised and presented and the 10-year 2008-2017 School Bus Replacement Plan resolution as advertised and presented.

Five section of claims for payment totaling $2,951,588.95 were submitted and accepted and the August 2007 General Fund Budget Report was received as a matter of Board information.The Board accepted donations as follows:

The Board approved one project change order as submitted to extend door bulkheads for 10 classrooms at North View Elementary totaling $3,673.

In a facilities update, Beth Ann Gibson of Construction Control, Inc. and project manager for the facilities renovation, reported that newly-constructed kitchens in the four renovated elementary schools are expected to be serving school lunches by September 24.

Mrs. Gibson also reported that Southside High School’s second floor - with the exception of six classrooms (which are tied to the first floor technology system) - would be available Wednesday, September 12. Technology in the remaining six classrooms is expected to be useable Monday, September 17, and the school’s media center computers – with 32 stations – would be available to students Wednesday.

Central High School, which Mrs. Gibson said is running “fairly well on schedule,” is seeing the last two to three weeks of renovation to the science area classrooms and the art classrooms are anticipated to be finished within one to two weeks following that completion. Work on the east and west ends of the Muncie Fieldhouse is now complete and roof replacement on the center of the structure will resume next summer.

At Southview Elementary, 16 classrooms have new carpeting and there are still eight classrooms to be carpeted, reported Bill Reiter, director of facilities. Carpeting work in the school’s corridors is currently ahead of schedule and work continues on the interior of the school’s media center.

The Board approved the teacher appointments of Aaron Thomas, English as a Second Language; Kelly Rhoads, kindergarten, North View Elementary, and Mark Cumings, Japanese/Basic Skills English, Southside High School. In a teacher-coach appointment, Larry Alexander was named Southside High School Boys’ Head Golf Coach.

Southside High School Senior Marissa Beaty of Southside High School read a proclamation stating the objective of Patriot Day, a day of remembrance of the 9-11-2002 terrorist attacks, and the board members and audience observed a moment of silence.
