Reed to Help Indiana Children Set World Reading Record

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen Reed joins Indiana children to set a new "World Record" for “the largest shared reading ever” on Thursday, Sept. 20 at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The Jumpstart “Read for the Record” campaign is part of a national effort to raise money for early education in low-income communities.

WHO:  Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen Reed, Indiana children

WHAT: National “Read for the Record” campaign aims to set a new "World Record" for “the largest shared reading experience” while raising money for early education in low-income communities.

WHEN: 11 a.m. Thu 9/20/07

WHERE: Children’s Museum of Indianapolis 3000 N. Meridian St.

WHY:   One-third of American children enter kindergarten developmentally behind their peers and without the skills necessary to succeed at grade level. The “Read for the Record” campaign raises public awareness about the early education gap that exists between income levels.

Through the “Read for the Record” campaign, Reed and an estimated 200,000+ children and adults across the U.S. will read the children’s classic The Story or Ferdinand to break the current record set last year by the inaugural campaign. That initial effort involved more than 150,000 people and raised more than $500,000 to support early education work in low-income communities.
