Logansport AFSCME Local 446 Backs Jill Long Thompson for Governor

Local 446 President: "Jill is the best Democrat to defeat Mitch Daniels"

ARGOS, IN - Logansport AFSCME Local 446 today announced its support of Jill Long Thompson for Governor.  The AFSCME local, which represents employees of the Logansport State Hospital, made its unanimous endorsement at a meeting Wednesday evening.

"Jill is the best Democrat to defeat Mitch Daniels. We need someone who can fix this mess. Jill is that person," said AFSCME Local 446 President Michael Williams.  "Jill has a positive vision for our state. Hoosiers need a Governor who will take on our problems, not ignore them and farm them out for someone else to not fix, with little over sight and no accountability to the general public."

"I am honored to have the endorsement of AFSCME Local 446," said Long Thompson. "The people of Local 446 work hard everyday to make Indiana a better place. They represent Hoosier values and I'm proud to have their support."

"I believe in her," said AFSCME Local 446 member and seventeen year Logansport State Hospital employee Ron Rivard. "Actions speak louder than words and Jill's actions on issues important to me and my union show what she's about and what she'll do as Governor."

The AFSCME endorsement came on the same day a poll was released by WISH-TV in Indianapolis showing Long Thompson the strongest Democrat to defeat Mitch Daniels in the general election.

The poll showed showing Long Thompson within 8 percentage points of Daniels in a potential general election match-up. The poll also showed that 41 percent of Democratic primary voters polled indicated support for Long Thompson, 16 percent favored State Senator Richard Young, Jr. while 10 percent chose Indianapolis architect Jim Schellinger.

Jill Long Thompson represented Northeast Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives serving from 1989 to 1995. She also served as Under Secretary of Agriculture for Rural Development from 1995 to 2001. Long Thompson most recently served as CEO of The National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy. She received her B.S. in Business from Valparaiso University, and her M.B.A. and Ph.D. in Business from Indiana University. Jill Long Thompson and her husband Don Thompson, a commercial airline pilot, live on their family farm in Marshall County.
