An Indiana National Guard Soldier Dies

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Governor Mitch Daniels and the Adjutant General of Indiana, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, have received notification that a Soldier of the Indiana National Guard has died at Ft. Knox, Ky.

Sgt. Gerald J. Cassidy, 32, of Battery C, 2-150th Field Artillery Battalion, Lebanon, Ind., deployed as an individual augmentee with a brigade combat team from the Minnesota Army National Guard. He received injuries during combat operations in Iraq.

Cassidy was a resident of Westfield, Ind. He was assigned to Ft. Knox in the Wounded Warrior Transition Program.

"Sgt. Cassidy represents citizen-Soldiers everywhere who sacrifice family and career to serve their state and nation. We extend our thoughts and prayers to the family of Sgt. Cassidy and want to express our deepest appreciation for his service," said Umbarger. "We have lost Soldiers at home and abroad, and every loss is felt very deeply within this family we call the Indiana National Guard."

Governor Mitch Daniels was deeply saddened by the news of the loss of this Soldier. "It's always difficult to deal with these situations and our hearts
go out to this Soldier's loved ones in this terrible time of need. We're all proud of the work Sgt. Cassidy has done for our country; he will be missed."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
