Ball State Dining Services Finishes Third in Nutrition-Innovation Contest
MUNCIE, INDIANA - A nutrition carnival sponsored by a residence hall won third place in the Most Innovative Nutrition Program Contest. Elliot Hall's dining services and chefs put on the March carnival for Burris Laboratory School students in kindergarten through fifth grade. It included activities such as games with prizes and pamphlets for parents.
"We wanted to make it enjoyable and show them nutrition could be fun," said Deborah Hutton, training manager for dining services. "You have to start at a very young age with children and make them aware."
In April, Hutton and others collected comments from carnival participants and took photographs, bound them into a notebook and submitted them to the National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS). In July, out of 600 schools, Ball State won third place.
"We're very proud that we're one of the top three colleges and universities in the country that delivers this type of nutrition program to its students," said Jon Lewis, director of campus dining services. "It was great to win."
