Back in the saddle
Just wanted to let everyone know I was down sick for a few days (been lucky so far, though, operating MFP with no health benefits! ;) Should have probably posted something, but didn't think I'd be down so long. I did keep a limited eye on the site, though.
We did have a few blog entries and what-not while I was away.
In any case, I'm back up (for the most part) and attempting to play catch-up. Stay tuned and remember this is a civil place for conversation - so... talk some more! ;)
Thanks,
K. Paul Mallasch

Glad You're Back
Bob Hertzog
Happy to see you feeling well again.
Thanks, Bob.
I've really been thinking about health insurance a lot lately. Being 'poor' opens your eyes to a lot of things. I'm asked all the time when I'm going to get a 'real job' with insurance, etc., but I'm not ready yet. I think I am doing some good by running Muncie Free Press. I could probably be better with my time management in general, but all things considered, I think I've been able to accomplish a lot over the last couple years.
The question does pop in my mind, though, about other options available to me. When I left Gannett, Amazon was wanting me to come out to Seattle. And I'd like to think there are one or two papers out there who would want my experience over the last two years if nothing else.
I'm here now, though, in the trenches as it were, and I would hate to be back in a suit in a stuffy office five years from now wondering what if I'd held out another six months, you know?
So, for now, I'm gonna stick it out. I have big plans. Things are moving slower than I thought they would, but they're moving forward, which is good.
Anyway, thanks. I did wonder after posting that how open you guys really want me to be with my day to day life. ;)

How Open?
Bob Hertzog
First, health care is the no. two issue for 2008 election. Irag being no. 1, of course. I believe we will have some sort of legislation that will provide health coverage for all Americans by the time the next president leaves office, assuming of course a Democrat gets elected.
It is way past time. Almost every industralized nation in the world provides health care for its citizens, except us.
I think you should be as open with your day to day life as you are comfortable with. I'm interested in any event.

Self-unemployed...
kpaul;
I've been self employed for 33 years. My wife has had her own business for 26 years. so when she was elected town court judge in 2003, it was the first actual paycheck we had recieved since our children were born. Health insurance has always been a concern, but we have opted for a major medical policy. It has a $5000.00 deductible, which makes it affordable, and our ordinary medical bills that we pay out of pocket are still less than a policy with a low deductible.
Paid insurance, paid vacations and a funded retirement make a "real job" sound inviting, but there is also a lot too be said for being your own boss. At least it has worked for us.
Hang in there!
I plan on it. ;)
And I do have plans.
All the comments and time people put into sharing on this site help make it easier.
