Pence Commends Senate Judiciary Committee for Passing Media Shield Bill
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Mike Pence applauded the Senate Judiciary Committee today for passing a federal media shield bill. Pence, together with Rep. Rick Boucher, authored similar legislation that passed the House Judiciary Committee in early August.
“Passage of the media shield bill in the Senate Judiciary Committee today brings us one step closer to repairing the tear in the First Amendment freedom of the press. I commend all of the Senators who have worked so hard on this issue, especially the senior Senator from my home state of Indiana, Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN),” said Pence.
“The House Judiciary Committee passed a strong media shield bill in early August and I urge both House and Senate leaders to schedule these measures for floor votes as soon as possible in order to protect the public’s right to know,” said Pence.
Pence first introduced the Free Flow of Information Act, or federal media shield bill, in 2005 during the 109th Congress with Senators Lugar and Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Rep. Rick Boucher. Boucher and Pence introduced the bill again at the beginning of the 110th Congress.
