Indiana State Police Now Accepting Applications for Motor Carrier Inspectors

INDIANA - The Indiana State Police are now accepting applications for Motor Carrier Inspectors. Inspectors enforce state and federal regulations pertaining to commercial motor vehicles operating within the state. They also assist with inspections on Indiana’s school buses.

"A great number of commercial motor vehicles travel on our state’s roadways," said Dr. Paul Whitesell, Indiana State Police Superintendent. "Indiana is the Crossroads of America and one of our duties is to make sure commercial vehicles are operating in a safe manner."

Trainees must complete the Motor Carrier Inspector School, which starts on February 25, 2008 and concludes with graduation on April 18, 2008. During the eight-week academy, trainees will develop skills including emergency vehicle operation, defensive tactics, communications, hazardous materials, first aid, post-crash investigation and truck inspections.

Applicants for the school must meet the following basic requirements in order to participate in the selection process:

          o Be at least 20½ years old.
          o Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
          o Be required to pass an oral interview, a background investigation, and a polygraph exam.
          o Be required to complete a medical exam, a psychological exam and drug test.
          o Possess a valid driver’s license.

Trainees are paid during the school and the department provides all necessary equipment. The starting salary is $23,938 and will increase to $27,440 on July 1, 2008. At the end of the first year of employment, the salary increases to $28,259 and could be more with opportunities for overtime pay. Over the next ten years with step increases in pay, a Motor Carrier Inspector may reach an annual salary of $41,421.
