Barry Welsh Comments on Mike Pence Vote Against SCHIP

CONNERSVILLE, IN - In a move widely expected by Congressional leaders who helped pass the landmark SCHIP children's health insurance program legislation, President Bush wielded his veto stamp for only the second time of his presidency earlier this week when he spurned members of his own party to kill the measure approved earlier this week by a wide bipartisan margin of 265-159. The vote failed to meet a veto-proof margin of 290 votes, setting the stage for the current battle between Democrats and Republicans.

IN-06 District Representative Mike Pence voted against the bill that would cover more than 10 million uninsured children under the Medicare State Children's Health Insurance Program that provides private medical insurance for children whose parent's income disqualify them for Medicaid coverage but who do not make enough to afford their own
coverage. Without this program, millions of children will lose their coverage and return to the ranks of the uninsured.

Democratic candidate for sixth District Congress Barry Welsh released the following statement. "Actions indeed speak louder than words, and that is perhaps never truer than with The Presidential Veto. Stem cell research, which could improve the lives of countless people, combined with the latest veto of healthcare for children, put on display for
all, the true colors of the Republican party and it's philosophy. The GOP can spend billions and billions of dollars for war, but not one cent more for the healthcare of children. Yet another reason why no Republican should ever hold elected office."
