MCS Announces Teacher of the Year Nominees for 2008

MUNCIE, Ind. -  Muncie Community Schools recognized 16 teachers at its October 9 Board of School Trustees meeting who were chosen as school candidates for the corporation’s nominee for the 2008 Indiana “Teacher of the Year” program.

The teacher recognition program is sponsored by the Indiana Department of Education and honors excellent educators from across the state. Building nominees recognized at Tuesday’s Board of School Trustees meeting were: 

  • Muncie Area Career Center – Carolyn Story
  • Youth Opportunity Center – Mike Tolle
  • Central High School – Phil Seale
  • Southside High School – Jane Sulanke
  • Northside Middle School – Kelli Turner
  • Wilson Middle School – Rebecca Troke
  • Garfield Elementary – Leslie Phillips
  • Grissom Elementary – Kelly Sloan
  • Longfellow Elementary – Jeanne LaSpina
  • Mitchell Elementary – Jennifer Stacy
  • North View Elementary – Ann Wasson (now retired)
  • South View Elementary – Stacie Buck
  • Storer Elementary – Pam Sommer
  • Sutton Elementary – Lisa Shaw
  • Washington-Carver Elementary – Barbara Webster
  • West View Elementary – Rhonda Ward 

Jeanne LaSpina, kindergarten teacher at Longfellow Elementary, was the corporation’s nominee for the state’s “2008 Teacher of the Year.” Mrs. LaSpina thanked the corporation for the nomination, but said all she ever wanted to be was a teacher and she could not imagine doing anything else.

School superintendents nominated 53 public and nonpublic educators as the 2008 Indiana Teacher of the Year. All state nominees will be honored November 7, 2007, at the Hilton Indianapolis North at a dinner hosted by the Indiana Department of Education and the program's corporate sponsors -- Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc., the Farm Bureau Insurance Companies, and the SMARTer Kids Foundation.
