Robert P. Bell Education Grants Awarded to Local Teachers

MUNCIE, IN - The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc. has announced that the following seven Robert P. Bell grants totaling $1,781 have been awarded to local teachers for the first quarter of the 2007-2008 academic year.  It is estimated that 582 Delaware County students will benefit from these grants.

  • Rose Davis, Albany Elementary School, was awarded $83 for first grade students to plant seeds and bulbs to learn about what plants need to grow.  The students will also compare different soils and environments and create terrariums in celebration of Earth Day.
  • Linda Smith, Muncie Central High School, was awarded $314 for sixth grade students to learn to use a star map and compass, the tools of an astronomer.  The unit will culminate with a trip to the Muncie Community Schools’ Planetarium for a Star Party.
  • Cindy Glaze, Desoto and Albany Elementary Schools, was awarded $350 for physical education students to sample various fruits and vegetables and learn about the nutritional value of the foods sampled.
  • Kathy Courtney, Pleasantview Elementary School, was awarded $330 for second grade students to increase their vocabulary and writing skills with the use of classroom dictionaries and thesauruses for children.
  •  Anne Wuthrich, Jenna Foster, Emma Rogers, and Karissa McIntosh, South View Elementary School, were awarded $350 for four kindergarten classes to participate monthly in a hands-on, skill enhancing activity with each kindergarten teacher and parent volunteers.  In October, students will discover if pumpkin seeds float or sink, learn pumpkin parts, and count pumpkin seeds.  They will taste several pumpkin products and create a graph representing class favorites.
  • Dawn Merkle, Daleville Junior/Senior High School, was awarded $226 for advanced Spanish students to create and paint a mural on the classroom wall based on researched styles of Hispanic artists.
  • Taryn Fine, West View Elementary School, was awarded $128 for second grade students to participate in a postcard exchange with classrooms from every state in the United States.  Students will practice their letter writing skills as they complete postcards for each participating class filled with facts about their own city and state.  The students will then write interesting facts they learned about each state in journals.

Bell Grants of up to $350 are awarded to teachers with innovative ideas, programs or projects designed to stimulate learning in their students.  The next deadline for Bell Grant applications is December 1, 2007.
