Recall Issued For Frozen Pot Pie Products Linked To Possible Salmonella Contamination

INDIANAPOLIS, IN  - ConAgra Foods has recently issued a voluntary recall of all of its frozen pot pies produced at the Missouri establishment, and state health officials are urging Indiana residents to dispose of the affected products.

The following brands of frozen pot pie products distributed in Indiana labeled with an establishment number of "P9" or "Est. 1059" and all varieties, including chicken, turkey and beef, are subject to the recall:

  • Banquet
  • Great Value (Wal-Mart)
  • Kirkwood (Aldi)
  • Kroger
  • Meijer

"We recommend people do not eat and do discard any pot pie with "P-9" or "Est. 1059" printed on the side of the package to avoid exposure to salmonella. The investigation has found persons have become ill even when the pot pies were cooked according to the product's cooking instructions," said Lynae Granzow, enteric epidemiologist at the Indiana State Department of Health. "The pot pies have an 18-month expiration date from the time of production so many people may still have these products in their freezers," said Granzow.

Salmonella is a bacterium found in the intestines of many animals.  People often become infected by eating contaminated or undercooked foods, such as poultry, eggs, and produce.  Salmonella can also be passed person to person by inadequately washing their hands after using the restroom. Symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, cramps, nausea, and gas, usually begin within 18-36 hours after ingesting salmonella. Most persons recover without medical treatment within four to seven days.

For questions about the recall, call (866) 484-8671 or go to www.conagrafoods.com.

Consumers can receive a refund by returning the product packaging -- minus the contents -- to the store where it was purchased or by sending the side panel of the package displaying "P-9" or "Est. 1059" to ConAgra Foods, Dept. BQPP, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, Nebraska 68103-0768.
