Reward Offered in Chicago Kidnapping

CHICAGO, Ill. - Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today that a reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to the identification and arrest of the individuals responsible for the September 10, 2007 kidnapping and murder of a 36-year old man and a 13-year old boy, both of whom were from Chicago.

Alejandro Sanchez, age 36, of the 2200 block of North Kostner and Israel Mendoza, the 13-year old son of Sanchez’ friend, along with a third man, were confronted by two armed men driving a gray van at approximately 9:00 PM, as they were in the alley behind the Kostner address. The three victims were forced into the trunk of their car and driven by one of the assailants to Oxbow Park, in Hammond, Indiana. All three victims were then taken from the car’s trunk and forced to kneel, at which time they were shot in the head. Sanchez died at the scene while Mendoza succumbed to his wound three days later. The third victim suffered only a graze wound and played dead at the scene, until the kidnappers fled. The wounded man was then able to stagger into a nearby nightclub, where he summoned help. The victim’s car was found abandoned, several days later, in the 1300 block of North Monticello in Chicago.

Witnesses have described Kidnapper # 1 as a black/male, 25-30 years of age, 5’7” tall, medium build, with a short beard and mustache. He was wearing a brown hooded sweater with gold lettering, a black cap and black pants. Kidnapper # 1 is depicted in the attached artist sketch.

Kidnapper # 2 has been described as a black/male, 25-30 years of age, 6’1” tall, medium build, with a mustache and short beard. He was wearing a gray polo shirt, black cap and black pants.

This case is being investigated by the Chicago FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF), which is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the Chicago Police Department and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff’s Police, along with Officers from the Hammond, Indiana Police Department.
