Lead Poisoning Prevention Week Targets Hoosiers of all Ages

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Already this year, millions of toys have been recalled worldwide from major manufacturers due to excessive lead levels, and health officials want Indiana residents to know the steps to take in order to prevent lead poisoning.

Lead, a highly toxic metal used for years in household products such as lead-based paints, can cause serious irreversible damage to a child's ability to grow and learn.

To raise awareness on the dangers of lead poisoning, Governor Mitch Daniels signed a proclamation designating Oct. 21-27 as Lead Poisoning Prevention Week in the state of Indiana.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, the Indiana State Department of Health in collaboration with the Indiana Black Expo, the Marion County Health Department, and Improving Kids Environment will host two events to educate and promote the importance of lead poisoning prevention.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monument Circle and at the Indianapolis Zoo, representatives will focus on educating parents about the dangers inside the home, collecting contaminated toys, and testing blood lead levels of young children.
