Six Hoosier Projects Earn Governor’s Environmental Awards
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence recognize exemplary Hoosier projects that are preventing and reducing pollution in the environment. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) will present the awards at the Association of Indiana Solid Waste Management Districts Inc. annual conference Oct. 23 and 24 in Indianapolis.
Tom Easterly, commissioner of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, said the work to improve the environment involves local innovation, enthusiasm and a commitment to change.
“These organizations are among the best of the best in Indiana, with deep commitments to understanding how to reduce pollution and instituting measurable practices. These are exemplary projects because they demonstrate significant, measurable results,” Easterly said.
These are the recipients:
- Indiana Dunes State Park, for reducing E. coli impact to Lake Michigan by returning Dunes Creek to a natural stream and wetlands area;
- Meadowlane Farms, a concentrated animal feeding operation in Clinton County, for technology changes that reduced the need for approximately 200 tons of fertilizer and other process changes;
- Lake County Solid Waste Management District, for its Garbage Scene Investigators educational program, which encourages and measures recycling;
