MCS Board Hears Plans for Credit Recovery Program

MUNCIE, Ind. - Muncie Community Schools’ seniors who will not have sufficient required credits to graduate at the end of the 2007-2008 school year will now be able to regain credits in order to complete graduation requirements through a new program called the “Credit Recovery Program.” The program, which will begin Monday, November 5, will operate in a lab environment at the Muncie Area Career Center where students will attend half-day sessions and work independently on one credit at a time under the direction of a teacher.

Through a selection process by the high school’s principal and guidance counselors, 60 MCS seniors will participate in the program at the Career Center, yet be considered students of their home high school and will be allowed to participate in their home school activities and other events. DiLynn Phelps, Director of Alternative Education and Diversity, says the Credit Recovery Program will provide the opportunity for students to regain credits and to stay in school in order to graduate on time and therefore lower the corporation’s drop-out rate.  Supt. Marlin B.  Creasy said he is “extremely pleased as the (drop-out rate) issue is a high priority for board members and administrators in retaining as many high school students as we can.”

A long-term Credit Recovery Program plan – to include sophomores and juniors who need to regain required credits – is being reviewed for implementation beginning second semester of the 2007-2008 school year.

The Muncie Community Schools Board of School Trustees appointed two persons to administrative positions at Central High School and Northside Middle School at Tuesday’s meeting. Bill Jones, interim associate principal of Central High School since school began August 16, was appointed acting associate principal for the high school for the remainder of the 2007-2008 school year. Kelli Turner, currently a math teacher at Northside Middle School, was appointed interim assistant principal at the school while Brad Maine remains on sick leave.

Lon Sloan was appointed the corporation’s School Safety Specialist, taking on one of the administrative areas that Bill Reiter, Director of Facilities and Operations, will vacate as he retires December 31, 2007.

The Board made two teacher appointments to Southside High School: Camille Bridges (a Southside High School alumna), business, effective November 12, and Alexandro Ruffatto, Speech and Language Pathologist, effective October 24.

Donations were accepted from the Kiwanis Club of Muncie for equipment at the Icerman Dental Program at the Muncie Area Career Center, $1,000; $100 cash for tote bags for Northside Middle School student activities and $255.09 from Target to Northside Middle School for student activities. Donations of cash, sports tickets, merchandise, and gift cards totaling $968 were accepted for a golf fundraiser activity for Brad Maine.

The board recognized members of the Storer Elementary Parent Teacher Organization who were instrumental in submitting and gaining an honorable mention award by PTO Magazine which recognizes outstanding programs and school events sponsored by a parent group. The PTO entered its very successful “International Night” in the category of “Outstanding Outreach to a Multicultural Parent Base” and was awarded an honorable mention placing nation-wide. Steve Edwards, assistant superintendent/instruction, was recognized for receiving the “Outstanding Contribution to Education” award by the Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce at it annual business meeting and awards dinner October 18.
