Indiana State Police Seek Cadets for 69th Recruit Academy

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indiana State Police are proud to announce that applications for the 69th Recruit Academy are now being accepted. The Academy will commence on Monday, June 16, 2008 and will train the recruits for 27 weeks. 

Individuals who are interested in beginning a rewarding career as a Trooper with the Indiana State Police may apply online.  The preliminary application, which is the first step towards a career with the Indiana State Police, captures essential information to determine if the applicant meets basic requirements.

Basic requirements for an Indiana State Police Trooper:

• Be a United States citizen.
• Be at least 21 and less than 40 years old when appointed as a police employee.
• Have vision correctable to 20/50
• Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Must possess a valid driver's license to operate an automobile.

"One of our main priorities with the 69th Recruit Academy is to increase the diversity of our applicants," said Superintendent Paul E. Whitesell, Ph.D. "Having a department that reflects the people of Indiana is very important to the Indiana State Police."

Recruits with the Indiana State Police are some of the highest paid in Indiana and the Midwest.  Recruits are paid during training, and all necessary equipment is provided upon appointment.  A recruit trainee is paid $1,417.40 bi-weekly during the academy training.  Once, a trooper graduates from the academy the starting salary is $38,444.00 a year.  Additionally, the Indiana State Police offers an excellent healthcare plan, which includes medical, dental, vision and pharmacy coverage for both active and retired employees and their families.  The Indiana State Police pension program provides a lifetime pension after 25 years of service.  Other department benefits include comprehensive disability coverage and a life insurance program. 

Recruits graduate as elite members of the law enforcement community with career opportunities in such areas as forensic science, investigations, aviation and special tactical teams.  Skills developed over the 27-week academy include emergency vehicle operation, basic and tactical firearms, psychology, report writing, physical fitness, defensive tactics, communications, investigations of all types of crimes, news media skills, photography and intensive training in criminal and traffic law.
