Navy Suspends Use of BDU-48 Training Bombs

NORFOLK, VA - According to a press release Monday, November 5, 2007, Naval Air Forces has temporarily suspended use of BDU-48 training bombs as a precautionary safety measure while the investigation of an inadvertent bomb release continues.

A BDU-48 accidentally fell from an F/A-18C aircraft near Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Va. on Oct. 30 as the aircraft was returning from a routine training mission over the Navy's Dare County, N.C. bombing range. The bomb caused minimal damage and there were no injuries to any personnel.

The BDU-48 has been used for training for many years and has been considered a safe and effective training device. During the past three years only 15 of more than 30,000 dropped have been considered "hung ordnance," or failed to release from the aircraft.

An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of this incident.
