Voices from Pakistan

After President Mushraff imposed emergency rule in Pakistan, bloggers have been voicing strong opinions on the issue. Pakistani bloggers and those who are monitoring the country closely have taken up the freedom blogosphere offers to let the world know what is going on.

Pakipositive.com, a collection of Pakistani blogs, All Things Pakistan, a blog that was mentioned on CNN  today are two blogs I have started to frequent for their great writing and also up to the moment reporting.

Independent media is off the air in the country, thousands of activists, lawyers have been detained or put under house arrest. International news channels are also off and some Pakistani expatriates have reported difficulty calling home, sending text messages.

Al Jazeera and various Arab news outlets are interviewing locals to get the feel of what is happening in the streets of Pakistan.

Khaleej Times contacted Pakistani citizens living in United Arab Emirates about the difficulty in calling relatives in the country.

Al Jazeera's website has a page on"Voices from Pakistan". There Asma, resident of Karachi comments on situation in the country "It feels like we are in the Stone Age as all our private TV channels are off air. We are relying on internet news sites for access to information." Source

fascinating stuff

Sad, but interesting in that the news is still getting out. They can't shut down the internet - the power of people as journalists. I haven't had time to check any blogs yet, but would love to hear if you notice anything about the way information is coming out of the country.
