Scraps From My Table: Post Election 2007 Edition
By Mayor Buckwheat
I'm not an "I told you so" kinda guy, but...
Predictions
Mayor My prediction Actual
Smith 45% 45%
Ockomon 51% 50%
Bibbs 3% 3%
Jozwiak 1% 2%
Ockomon will win based on an intensive grass roots effort and an army of workers who are skilled at get out the vote efforts. The number of absentee votes that he will garner will dwarf those of other candidates. Smith's "Continue the Progress" slogan will fail to resonate with rank and file voters who feel that they've been left behind. Bibbs will get a few votes due to a good absentee vote effort but undermined himself with his literal failure to "show up" in the campaign. Jozwiak will receive the 'none of the above' vote.
What can I say? I hit this one closer than any expert, pundit, newspaper or voodoo priest. I actually frighten myself. I think I may have tapped into some spooky otherworld where I have visions of future happenings. I have been having premonitions of an earthquake in........ well, don't worry about that. It's not for a few more days. Rob Jozwiak got 1% more of the vote than I had predicted. I must have underestimated the rabid Mexican deportation wing of the Republican Party.
City Council Ward 3
Although Jay Stapleton has made a good effort to retain his seat, he will lose by a sizable margin to Pam Jones. Ward 3 will be the area of town where Ockomon will reclaim wayward Democrats from 4 years ago, spelling Jay's demise.
Ding, ding, ding. Ring the bell on this one. Jay was boasting the day before the election that Kevin was sporting a sizable lead in all the polls. He must have forgotten to check with me.
City Council Ward 4
It is fortunate for Ollie Dixon that he is not mixed up in an at-large race. He is extremely unpopular outside his district. However... he will hold it together in the 4th.
This one was too easy. His opponent was in jail on election day. Not even I could have predicted that one.
City Council Ward 5
Art Pepelea is also fortunate that he is not involved in a city wide race. His meddling in the airport fiasco is very unpopular throughout the city. I think about 6 weeks ago he realized that he might be looking at a loss unless he quit playing air traffic controller and got to work in his district. He will win in a race that ends up closer that it had to be for him.
Once again. I win. Artie is fortunate that he lives in an almost exclusively republican district. His airport deal is dead for a few years. I suggest he stays in his district and cultivates a different aviation hobby. Like... Jarts.
City Council Ward 6
Joe Newman wins. Easily. I am not a fan of candidates being unopposed, but in this case Dunteman should have stayed home. It was never close.
Duh.
City Council At-Large
Two easy picks. Chamberlain and Muir. The third one is driving me nuts. My poll tells me that Joe McClain will unseat fellow Republican Kato Smith and win this one. David Eicks could very easily slide in there if Republican votes are closely divided between Smith and McClain. My gut tells me to go with Kato. He is one of the most popular Republicans in Andersonia right now and with good reason. He is a man of integrity who serves the city with the proper motives. All that said, what good is a poll if the pollster is unwilling to stand behind it? At large winners: Chamberlain, Muir, and McClain.
Ouch. I hit Chamberlain and Muir. Missed the third one. I did leave myself a little wiggle room with Eicks. I'm gonna give myself a half a point for that one.
The scorecard...
I picked the mayor's race within 1%. That's within NASA's margin of error. They could send a Dixie cup into orbit around Jupiter with that kind of accuracy.
I picked all the district council seats. That wasn't so difficult. I didn't even have to use chicken entrails for them.
I picked two out of three at-large seats and was giving serious thought to the other one. I'm still taking half a point on that one.
Congratulations to:
Ava Likens Autry. She worked hard and preformed better than I had expected her to. Look for her to take Art Pepelea's seat in the next go around. I think she has great potential although she could use a new look.
Rodney Chamberlain. I met him and his campaign chairperson Kim Townsend for the first time at the victory celebration Tuesday evening. They are both charming and gracious people. I like'em!
Kato Smith. Even though he lost his race, he escaped with all his class and dignity. He served this community well as a council member. His experience and level headed thinking will be missed.
Pam Jones. I have never met her, but anyone that sends Jay Stapleton packing is a superstar in my eyes. I think her efforts in the 3rd played a large part in Ockomon's success.
Kris Ockomon. Wow! His hard work and his ability to mobilize an army of workers payed off in a big way. Mid-day on election day Kevin Smith was kicked back in his office chair listening to smooth jazz. He told an HB reporter, “The question is why (Ockomon) is going site to site to site,” Smith said. “The time to get votes is before Election Day by knocking on doors.” Kris Ockomon answered Smith's question in telling manner. He was out working while Smith was preening and preparing his victory speech.
Congratulations, Acting Mayor Elect, Kris Ockomon!!!!!
My Final Words For
The Acting Mayor
Treat others with dignity and respect if you wish the same in return.
Laugh at yourself often and it won't be quite so painful when others laugh at you.
It's more important to listen to those that disagree with you than those who always nod their approval.
Not everyone who disagrees with you hates you. Only some.
Praising someone else never diminishes you, it increases your stature. Leave your office on January 1st as a giant.
Don't leave your desk a mess!
