New Taxpayer Organization Demands Floor Vote

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Hoosier taxpayer organizations from across the State announced on Thursday, November 15, 2007 that  they have organized an Alliance to fight for repeal of property taxes.

John R. Price, Attorney and Chairman of the new organization, said, "Opinion polls and election polling results both confirm that a clear majority of Hoosiers want to repeal the State’s fatally flawed property tax system. So, what is missing from the tax debate? Neither the Governor, nor the Speaker nor Senator Kenley has even acknowledged that most Hoosiers favor repeal. Their proposals are far from Hoosiers’ expressed opinions and votes as stated in the polls and cast in the polling booths. What’s missing in the tax debate is the opportunity for Hoosiers to vote to amend their Constitution to repeal the right of the government to tax their homes, farms and businesses."

Joining Price at the media conference held outside the House Chambers in the State House, were representatives of ten Indiana taxpayer organizations and several Marion County voters active in generating grass roots support for challenger Greg Ballard, elected last week as Mayor of Indianapolis.

"After Greg Ballard’s stunning property tax-based victory," Price added, "The Indianapolis Star asked incumbents if they were listening. Apparently the three top leaders of the State aren’t listening. The voters who labored to make possible last week’s historic political tsunami will not willingly allow their victories to be dismissed with proposals to again ‘bait and switch’ Hoosiers with tax band aids. Over the next few weeks the Alliance, and its members from all areas of the State of Indiana, will ask the General Assembly to allow a floor vote in each chamber on the proposal to amend Indiana’s Constitution to repeal property taxes.

"Why, exactly, should our State’s elected legislators not have the right to vote, on an up or down vote, on this proposal which is widely seen by voters as their choice for the future of taxation in Indiana? What stands between those legislators who favor repeal of property taxes and their ability to vote to repeal, apparently, is Speaker Bauer and Senator Kenley, led by a Governor who rejects repeal, in spite of what the majority of Hoosiers clearly want. In the 2008 session Hoosier taxpayers will be heard, as never before."
