Revisiting the Basic's of keeping ones web presence.

Back in 1999, I decided I would try to take advantage of the emerging World Wide Web as it was developing in our little part of the world, and do more then just word processing, spreadsheets, and data base tracking.

So I looked around and found all these emerging "Free" web site "shells" that one could use and just like plug and play technology,  One just filled in the blanks and cut and pasted and did some linking to other HTML sites and content and walla!  You too could have a web presence.  now, I did and don't pay for a domain name or stand alone site, so I have to put up with advertising and such, an by extension so do visitors to my site.  But that is not all bad, at worst it is inconvenient or somewhat annoying.

But, I say all that to say this; between the free sites on search engines, and blog sites, and email providers all add up to a powerful presence in cyberspace.  To say the least, I have found no good reason in any of my industries to apply conventional thinking to paying for services that can be secured for free if you are willing and able to do the work needed to create, and maintain a web presence.  Ranking is just not that important.

Consider the power of "LOCAL" in many of he search engines you could use on Yahoo, MSN, AOL Etc. and how you only have to put in the name of a person or business and a city and walla! here comes all these choices!  Read the fine print and don't allow yourself to be confused by Key Words, in any description that may appear.  Do though, Look for "Primary Key words"  as in Randall Jacobsen Sr, Muncie, Indiana within the search results and don't be afraid to go to the second or third tier.  Not everyone does as well as others in rankings due to lack of "frequency" of searches and results once found read, or clicked through to and time spent there.

It is a good thing to write reviews of other places you shop, eat, visit, interact with, even if they are competitors.  It is good to have reviews written about you and your little or big business.  It is good to have "critical review" to know what others perceive about our business and the way we do business, or even ourselves and what they like and don't like about what we do.  Don't let yourself take it personal, as it is someone Else's opinion and you know what they say about them, every one has one and is entitled to present it.  But that's OK, the world is a better place due to diversity and different points of view, other then our own.

So when you come down to it all, at it's base level, place like the Muncie Free Press is one of the Best Greatest Freedom of the Press and way to express oneself on the web and similar sites are a real God Send.  I am rally thankful that anyone anywhere is willing to read my little thoughts on so simple and obvious a plan to be seen, heard, and found.  But thank God it works and not only that it works very well.  i like the combination of Free site, Blogs, Reviews, the Muncie Free Press (make sure it has a good RSS feed) and Personal Pages like Yahoo 360, MSN spaces, and such.

Yours in Cyberspace,

Randall L. Jacobsen Sr.

Thanks, Randall!

Sorry I've been away a bit. Anderson Free Press is really taking off, though. The good news is that everything I'm learning over there will be eventually made available here too. (Eventually you'll be able to go to any Free Pres site of mine and not have to have different user accounts...)

In the meantime, though, check out something I cooked up last night...
