Can we afford a Charter School in Muncie?
In the big news papers we are asked do we want a charter school in Muncie? Maybe it is a better question to ask can we afford one?
Afford one? Yes of course. Someone has to pay for it, at some point. And if you let parents take their vouchers to the Charter School and avoid the Public schools more and more, over time the Public schools are made more expensive and the Charter School takes it pound of flesh in the form of Parental Involvement ( a good thing), but one that requires time, dedication, and commitment. From my point of view we are way past time on starting to have one.
If in fact, I have come to beleive we can't not afford to have one and maybe need two or three. I don't suppose it will happen overnight, but because we are currently so dissatisfied with our present school system costs we will see this one come about in short order.
If we truely have increased in Knowledge, Understanding and Wisdom, I would hope the City and County systems will indeed embrace this idea and help to encourage it and be alert to ways to reduce budgets further, and stop all the mindless expenditures on Capital Improvements, while faced with a reducing student population, tax base, and residents ability to cope with such innate entrenched ignorance coming out of our schools system these days.
If Muncie Central Boasting a 67 % graduation rate is any indication of the payback on our public investment, then we need to shut as many schools down as possible and as fast as possible and indeed embrace a more practical, less costly model.
