New Tipton Subdistrict opens its doors

TIPTON, Ind. - The new Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) subdistrict facility that serves communities from Kokomo to Carmel and Sheridan to Elwood is now operational.  Yesterday, doors were opened to the public for tours of the $2.9 million operations center located along State Road 28 on the west edge of Tipton.  The 37,224 square foot structure replaces a nearby building that was constructed in 1935.

The Tipton Subdistrict maintains state highways and interstate routes in Howard, Tipton and Hamilton Counties.  In addition, about half of Madison County and parts of Boone County are within its service area.  This winter, 60 drivers working 12-hour shifts will operate 33 trucks along 30 designated snow routes.  The subdistrict maintains 920 lane miles, including 72 interstate lane miles.
