Democrat Senators call for release of Centers for Independent Living funds
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - State Senator Vi Simpson (D-Elletsville), State Senator Sue Errington (D-Muncie) and State Senator Tim Skinner (D-Terre Haute) delivered a letter to Governor Mitch Daniels today calling for the immediate release of funding appropriated for seven Centers for Independent Living.
According to the senators, "Hundreds of disabled Hoosiers in 50 counties will lose vital services on which they depend to avoid institutional placement and to assure a better quality of life for those who remain in their homes and live as productive members of their communities.
This course of action does not reflect your stated commitment to serving every Hoosier and is in direct conflict with the mission of the Family and Social Services Agency to ‘help people help themselves'."
Funding for the Centers for Independent Living was appropriated by the 2007 General Assembly in the state budget. The budget was signed into law by Governor Daniels in May.
