The History Channel and what is passed off as History
It is the Sunday before Christmas, and I am chilling out and indulging myself watching com-cast Channel 50 ( The History Channel) on a series I have been hearing folks talk about the past few days About Christ the missing years, the lost Gospels, and origins of some of our Christian Traditions and a bit (very little bit) of history mixed with a lot of supposition, and opinion. Some from what you might accept as Doctors of Theology, or Divinity or simple historians who because of the opportunity the sponsors have chosen to do a series on are giving these folks an opportunity to try and explain some things folks have been wondering about.
Is it good "History" not at all. Is it supported by verifiable facts and resources from several agreeing texts or supporting documents? Not ones that could stand up to cross examination. What about the lost this or the missing that? They suppose, or purport to be "possible" and maybe even "tangible" as historical "precedents" and archaeological or documented fact that can be shown today. Mostly pseudo science and research.
I for one like a good story, but don't like it presented as the Gospel Truth or used in a subliminal way to try to get me to think of it in terms of anything other then a good story. or an amusing alternative that is unable to be authenticated. Left in a Novel element to be fertile ground it can cause it's own form of harm in an otherwise undisciplined mind. Some folks are given to flights of fancies and can't or won't distinguish between reality and proposed or supposed possible choices of a Virtual record, vs. a historic record. I am NOT talking about interpretation here. I am really saying I beleive in the inspired word of God, even if I don't fully understand portions of the revealed record fully yet. I am intentionally choosing to beleive and I am intentionally choosing to not beleive the History Channel version as presented.
I have read many of the "referenced" materials and studied the doctrines in depth, and the history that is supposed to persuade me to beleive another form of Faith or Belief about the People I have grown up to believe are as real as you or I in our Bible. Much has been said and much is yet to be said about these "pseudo historical" accounts but I don't think I have heard or seen anything that should shake ones Christian Faith. Or fundamentals of ones faith.
So my advise to any who have or will watch this series is, put on your Faith Glasses and don't beleive all you see or hear on TV. Some things even if they were ever true for whatever reason they didn't make it into our cannon, really don't make a bit of difference in what was done for our Salvation. God is still in control to bring about His Sovereign Will and does not ask Mankind if we approve or for that matter our advice on how He should run things. Christ is Still His only begotten Son and Still the Savior of all who beleive on Him, whom the Father Sent and Call Upon His Name whom was sent to fulfill all Scripture of Prophecy about the Messiah, The Holy One of Israel. Christ is the same yesterday, today and in His soon Appearing as the Scriptures declare.
Be of a good courage, withstand and be an over-comer until the passing of this life into the next. And I for one, look forward to seeing you on the other side. Glory be to the one true God and Father of the Lord our God, Christ Jesus. And Honor and Glory be unto His son, Jesus of Nazareth, whom God made to be both Lord and Christ, and will come to Judge the quick and the dead by the Faithful Word, revealed unto all mankind. Glory and Honor be unto the Lamb of God slain before the foundations of this world and unto Him that sits upon the Throne in Righteousness and Mercy! Amen!
