Jill Long Thompson Announces Major Union Endorsement

Service Employees International Union Supporting Gubernatorial Bid

ARGOS, IN - Jill Long Thompson announced this week the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is endorsing her in the race for Governor. The endorsement was recommended by the Illinois State Council, which represents over 165,000 workers in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri. SEIU has over 1.9 million members in North America.

"I am honored to have the support of SEIU," said Long Thompson. "From nurses and home health care workers to public safety and janitorial staff, the members of SEIU make Indiana a better place to live, work and raise a family. I'm proud they're on my team and I'm proud to be on theirs."

SEIU joins the United Steelworkers (USW); the Communications Workers of America (CWA); the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE); the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU); AFSCME Local 446 and United Transportation Union (UTU) Local 298 in supporting Long Thompson. Together, the unions represent over 80,000 Hoosiers.

The endorsements come on the heels of an independent poll showing Long Thompson leading Mitch Daniels in the race for Governor, 44% to 43%. That is the second public poll showing Long Thompson leading or within striking distance of Daniels. Long Thompson held a 31 point lead over her primary opponent in the last public primary poll.

Jill Long Thompson represented Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives serving from 1989 to 1995. She served as Under Secretary of Agriculture for Rural Development from 1995 to 2001. Long Thompson formerly served as C.E.O. of the National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy. She received her B.S. in Business from Valparaiso University and M.B.A. and Ph.D. in Business from Indiana University. Jill Long Thompson and her husband Don Thompson, a commercial airline pilot, live on their family farm in Marshall County.
