Update: Indiana State Trooper Dies in the Line of Duty in Traffic Crash
FULTON COUNTY, IN - Sunday, at approximately 10:42 p.m., Indiana State Trooper Daniel Barrett, 25, of Logansport, IN, was killed in a single vehicle crash on U.S. 31 south of State Road 110. Trooper Barrett was on duty at the time of the crash.
Evidence at the crash scene and an eye witness account has lead investigators to believe Trooper Barrett was attempting to catch a speeding vehicle that was traveling northbound on U.S. 31. Before Trooper Barrett was able to make contact with the speeding vehicle, for an unknown reason his fully marked state police Crown Victoria traveled off the east side of the road striking a tree at the driver’s side door.
Trooper Barrett was pronounced dead at the scene. Numerous traffic citations and warnings were found in Barrett’s police car indicating he was concentrating on traffic enforcement in the area of the crash.
An inspection of Trooper Barrett’s Indiana State Police Crown Victoria was conducted by a certified mechanic. No evidence of mechanical failure was observed. The investigation has not revealed any evidence of foul play.
Trooper Barrett was wearing his seat belt, but the impact of the crash was too severe for it to have saved his life.
This is an ongoing investigation.
