Central Indiana plow trucks gear up for winter storm

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - With snow predicted to fall through Tuesday morning's rush hour, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) reminds commuters Ice & Snow: Take it Slow. About 350 of INDOT's yellow trucks will come online by midnight to plow and treat state highways across Central Indiana.

Preparation for winter weather began Monday afternoon. As temperatures rose, INDOT tankers pre-treated bridges and heavily traveled routes with salt brine. A thick saltwater solution, salt brine sticks to the pavement and helps melt snow before it accumulates.

INDOT truck drivers alternate 12-hours shifts for around-the-clock coverage, and each route takes two to three hours to complete. Tips for drivers and helpful winter weather links can be found online at WinterDrivingSafety.IN.gov.
