Troopers Busy with Crashes and Slide Offs
PLEASE, do not call city, county, or state police dispatch centers for road and weather updates. These lines need to be kept open for emergency calls.
PERU, IN - Today, Indiana State Police Officers have been busy responding to numerous crashes and slide offs. Since 2:00 a.m., troopers working from the Indiana State Police Peru Post, which covers Fulton, Cass, Miami, Tipton, Wabash, and Howard Counties, have investigated or assisted other agencies with a total of 16 crashes and slide offs. Four of those crashes resulted in injuries, with one person suffering a serious head injury.
"One common thread for the numerous incidents is motorists driving too fast for slick road conditions," stated Master Trooper Randy Shaver. "When the roads are snow covered, icy or wet drivers should reduce the speed of their vehicles."
Most counties in north central Indiana are expected to receive snow fall into the evening hours. This will create some slick spots especially on rural roads and side streets. To help Hoosiers prepare for this winter weather the Indiana State Police offer the following tips.
- Before traveling, check the forecast and let someone know your intended route.
- Keep your gas tank at least half-full.
- Carry a winter driving kit that should include blankets, flashlight, extra batteries, a brightly colored cloth, sand (or cat litter), shovel, candle, matches, non-perishable high calorie food, first aid kit, and jumper cables.
- Slow down on snow/ice covered roads.
- Allow extra time to arrive at your destination.
- Clear all windows of ice and snow and remove snow from your vehicle’s hood, roof, and lights.
- Use extra caution when driving across bridges, underpasses, and shaded areas where ice is slow to melt.
- Avoid abrupt stops and starts. Slow down gradually and keep wheels turning to avoid loosing traction.
For up-to-date road and weather information, citizens are encouraged to tune to local television and/or radio stations.
