Indianapolis Traffic Advisory & Crash Update

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -  Driving conditions throughout the greater Indianapolis area continue to be slick and hazardous, especially in specific areas.  As of the writing of this update state police are working three different crashes that occurred in the area of southbound I-65 around the 128 mile marker in Boone County.  We’re also working three separate crashes in the area of southbound I-465 and I-70 on the west side of Indianapolis.  About six other crashes have been reported around I-465 and locations on I-70 and I-65 in and outside the I-465 area.

The five mile stretch of southbound I-65, from the Marion / Johnson County line (100 mile marker) to the Whiteland exit, (95 mile marker) still has slick and hazardous spots, but is open.

NOTE:  The left lane of southbound I-65 at the 97 mile marker will be closed from now (9:45 a.m.) until approximately 1:00 p.m. this afternoon as the semi truck that rolled over at that location is off-loaded.  This was a property damage crash that involved a semi loaded with sheet metal.

UPDATE: The most serious crash occurred at about 5:59 this morning and involved a car going too fast for the prevailing road conditions.  This car was occupied by the driver, Angela Wood, 30 of Franklin, Indiana and her four-year-old son Nick Schelske.  Ms. Wood lost control of her car, spun out and struck another passenger vehicle and a semi-truck.  The occupants of the other vehicles were not injured.  Nick Schelske suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his mouth and is being treated at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

The Commander of the Indianapolis State Police Post, Lt. Jay Nawrocki commented "Virtually all of the crashes we’ve experienced so far were preventable.  Drivers must be aware of existing road conditions and reduce their speed accordingly."

As mentioned in the previous release, motorists involved in crashes that do not involve injury and where the vehicle is still drivable are encouraged to exchange information with the other driver to include name, address, driver license number, vehicle type and license plate number along with the name of the insurance carrier, policy number and agent phone number.  This exchange of information should take place off the roadway in a safe place.
