State Provides Assistance to Shipshewana Wastewater Treatment Plant

A high level of flow into the Shipshewana wastewater treatment plant late Sunday afternoon has caused the plant to lose effective treatment. Personnel from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and the wastewater treatment plant operator are working together to bring the wastewater treatment plant back to normal operations.

The Shipshewana area experienced flooding in recent days, which may have contributed to the high flow into the plant. The incident has resulted in the intermittent discharge of untreated or partially treated wastewater and sludge to the facility's receiving ditch.

Seasonal cold temperatures serve to reduce potential environmental impacts to aquatic life from a discharge of untreated or partially treated wastewater and sludge. Residents are advised to avoid contact with water and keep pets out of the ditch while the problem is being corrected.
