State awards $5.1 million in Training Acceleration Grants
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indiana Department of Workforce Development in coordination with its WorkOne centers and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation have awarded $5,124,868 in Training Acceleration Grants to 53 Indiana companies or consortia.
The Training Acceleration Grant program is the state's primary incumbent worker training program. It provides matching grants to companies and organizations seeking to expand the skills of existing workers through training, which results in industry-recognized credentials.
"Training grants help our Indiana companies and their workers stay competitive," said Teresa Voors, commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
"An educated workforce is the cornerstone of our state's economy," said Nathan J. Feltman, Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. "The Training Acceleration Grant program helps Indiana companies increase the skills of their workforce and sets the foundation for a more diverse economic base that will continue to pay dividends well into the future."
The program has four core objectives: promoting small businesses; fostering job retention and expansion; increasing personal income for Hoosier workers; and providing training to address skill gaps in the Hoosier workforce.
The grants announced today were awarded by the state in November and December 2007 and January 2008.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development is charged with continually improving the Hoosier workforce by assisting companies to create new jobs and improve employee skills. The agency offers a variety of training and educational grants, partners with Indiana's 35 WorkOne Centers and 50 WorkOne Express Centers, administers the unemployment insurance system, provides labor market information, assists employers with preparing workers for layoffs and closures and operates a statewide job placement service.
Established under Governor Mitch Daniels in 2005 to replace the former Department of Commerce, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation is governed by a 12-member board chaired by Governor Daniels. Indiana Secretary of Commerce Nathan Feltman serves as the chief executive officer of the IEDC. Since the creation of the IEDC, the state has posted three consecutive years of record-breaking commitments for new jobs.
