Indiana Congresswoman Julia Carson memorialized in General Assembly

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -The Indiana State Senate took a moment of silence on Monday in honor of the late Congresswoman Julia Carson. The General Assembly welcomed Carson's grandsons Andre and Sam Carson for the reading of House Concurrent Resolution 30 in both chambers.

State Senator Jean Breaux (D-Indianapolis), sponsor of the resolution in the Senate, said it was an important opportunity to honor Carson's many years of outstanding service to the citizens of Indiana and to her community in Central Indiana, including 18 years in the General Assembly.

"Today we honor one of our own," Breaux told her colleagues in the Senate on Monday. "Congresswoman Carson is an inspiration to so many, and I personally hold her in the highest regard for her commitment to public service, her determination, and her devoted friendship."

Carson was elected to the Indiana State House of Representatives in 1972 and served in that office until she was elected to the State Senate in 1976. She then served in the Senate until 1990 when she became Center Township Trustee. She was then elected and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1996 until her death on December 15, 2007, at the age of 69.
