IDEM invites public to comment on fine particle air status in Lake and Porter counties

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - IDEM invites citizens to a public hearing about the proposed redesignation of Lake and Porter counties to attainment for the annual fine particle (PM2.5) air standard. IDEM has submitted a petition to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the area’s redesignation based on monitoring data that show the area is in compliance with the national air quality standard.

Staff from IDEM will be available at the hearing to answer questions and provide the public with information about the petition and Indiana’s plan for maintaining future air quality. IDEM also will accept oral and written comments from the public during the hearing.

The public can review an electronic copy of the draft petition on the IDEM Web site at http://www.idem.IN.gov/programs/air/redesignations/index.html or visit any of the following locations to review physical copies of the draft petition and related documents:

• Whiting Public Library, 1735 Oliver Street, Whiting, Indiana;
• Hammond Public Library, 564 State Street, Hammond, Indiana;
• Gary Public Library, 220 West 5th Avenue, Gary, Indiana;
• Valparaiso Public Library, 103 Jefferson Street, Valparaiso, Indiana;
• Crown Point Community Library, 214 South Court Street, Crown Point, Indiana;
• IDEM Northwest Regional Office, 8315 Virginia Street, Suite 1, Merrillville, Indiana; and,
• IDEM Central File Room, 12th floor of the Indiana Government Center North building, 100 North Senate Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana, Monday through Friday, excluding official holidays, between the hours of 8:15 a.m. and 4 p.m. (local time). Call (317) 233-0429 beforehand to set up an appointment.
